I'm not sure when they discontinued, but mine is of 1937 manufacture and has the long octagon bbl.

My 2003 Marlin Catalog lists a Model 1897T with 20" octagonal barrel along with the Golden 39A. Marlin has offered octagonal barrels on the 39A off and on through the years.

    A-37...

It is important that you/we differentiate between the "Model 39" and the "Model 39A" in answering your question... I assume it was directed to the "Model 39". That assumption made, the "Model 39" was always made with an octagon barrel (1922 - 1938).

The Model 39A is an entirely different story... you will need to identify the specific sub-model and variation if your question was directed towards it.

Thanks for the input. I was referring to the Model 39. Still kicking myself for not buying ($50) the one I saw in a gunshop in Altus OK about 40 years ago. Octagonal barrel, of course.
