If you had a 9mm Para. revolver, could you also shoot 9mm Makarov and .380 ACP?

Not to be contradictory or anything, but yes you might be able to shoot .380, but it is a VERY BAD IDEA. You will see the cases bulge and you may see some other problems as well. Unlike .38spl in a .357mag, where you just have a shorter casing, the .380 is a straight case as where the 9mm Luger has a slight taper. Hence the .380 case will expand to the cylinder wall and there may be some powder and other material come out the back at the time of firing. Additionally the head of the .380 is slightly smaller than the 9mm. On a pistol with an extractor this may not be a problem, but with the full moon clips of the revolver, they will be loose and may not stay held very well. And since the .380 round won't be indexing on the front of the chamber since it is 2mm shorter, you may run into a problem there as well. The round may become dislodged from the full moon clip and deep seat into the chamber. It probably won't be able to be hit by the firing pin at that point and you may have to pry it out with a tool or cleaning rod. If the round is held partially by the full moon clip it may push through at the time the firing pin hits it and damage the full moon clip in the process.

As for the 9x18 Makarov I concur, that shouldn't be used as it is a larger diameter bullet than the 9x19/9mm luger.

So in general. I wouldn't recommend using anything other than the proper 9x19/9mm luger/9mm parabellum ammo the revolver was meant to use.

The only time you should ever try using some kind of ammo in a gun that it wasn't intended for is in the following scenario:

You are backed into a corner, with no where else to go. You are out of the proper ammo for your weapon. You are about to be eaten by a bear or some other wild animal. You will most certainly die if you don't kill the animal before it kills you. You could try one of the other rounds of ammo you have with you eventhough it isn't the right caliber for your gun. If it works and kills the animal about to eat you, great. If it doesn't work at all or blows the gun up in your face and kills you... Well no harm done, you were going to be eaten by the bear anyway, so you would be dead either way. Other than that scenario or something very close to it, You Should Never Use Ammunition in your weapon that it wasn't intended to use.

Over the years I've heard friends tell friends, fathers tell sons, "Know-it-Alls" tell anyone who would listen: "You can shoot _______ ammo in your _______ gun. There are a few things that are okay and a lot of things that aren't. I've never hesitated to tell the friend or whatever other listener that they shouldn't do what the other person just told them. However, you have to be careful telling a son that he should never, ever do what his father just told him. In that scenario you have to be a bit more diplomatic, but either way, you still need to correct the information. You'd feel like crap if you let them leave without saying something and later read in the paper that a young boy was killed when he fired the wrong ammo in his weapon and it blew up in his face. Then of course the anti-gun types would have a field day with that saying it was just one more reason to not have guns.

So please just use the correct ammo that the gun was meant to have and don't become a statistic. Besides, 9mm is cheaper to shoot and usually easier to find than .380 anyway.

NO!!! Don't do that. Shoot what the gun is designed to shoot. These questions on stuffing other ammo into something and making it go boom just keep popping up.

Several years ago I was at a range when some FOOL stuffed some different ammo into a revolver, and of course the resulting accident didn't injure the FOOL it got another person standing nearby.

I'm not trying to insult you, but I see so many novice shooters get sucked into doing things that just are not right. Please don't become a statistic or make someone else one either.

Whoa, this was only an 'in theory' question. I don't own a 9mm revolver, I was just curious. I was always under the impression that these 3 cartridges all used the same bullet diameter and the cases were the same minus 1 or 2 mm's respectively. I've learned some very valuable info, thanks guys.
