I don't think there is any difference. You will not see "AK-47" stamped on any "AK-47" you buy. The proper generic term is "AK" That can be a MAK 90 or any number of other rifles having the semi-automatic design
of the original AK (except it does not fore full auto).

The Mak-90 (modified AK) came along because of the '89 ban. It was the altered "legal" version of the previous ak variants. Pre 89 guns may be called ak's, I am not sure with Norinco. Most if not all pre 89 guns are really AKM, Ak modified. Russia changed the design of the gun in 1948 and renamed them Automat Kalashnikov Modified. Other countries/companies have just jumped on the band wagon of the ak-47 fame and used the name. Basically they are the same without the "evil" features. Just the pre 89's are really expensive.

On the various Norinco "AK" type designs, you will see many different designations. They can include, but are not limited to: 56S, 84S, MAK90, NHM90, MAK91, NHM91, BWF92, to name a few. The MAK90 stands for "M"odified "AK" of 19"90" China Sports used the NHM90 designation. The longer barreled models were the 91's.

Generically people refer to them as "AK's" just to save time. Additionally, many of the individuals asking about or talking about AK's don't know enough about the various specific ones to refer to them as anything other than an AK. Just like asking for a "Kleenex", a "Q-tip" or a "Band Aid" rather than askling for a "facial tissue", a "cotton swab", or an "adhesive bandage". It just saves time and everyone knows what you are asking for.
