the wt. of the gun should be in the bottom 2 fingers. the gun should be pushed back into your web to act as the gun anchor. some prefer round 1911 style mainspring housings to improve this. the stock 41 has it built into the wood grip. also, the wood should not touch the trigger finger past the second knuckle. the thumb just goes along for the ride. some stick their thumb up off the grips totally when firing. some dont even use thumb rests, to mimic the 45 event. a lot of peole have custom grips designed to allow the wt of the gun to sit on a wood ledge over the trigger finger knuckle. bottom line, the purpose of custom wood is to allow your gun grip to tighten up on key contact points when gripped. meaning as your muscles inflate when the gun is grasped, the skin lodges in tighter and the hand and wood become one. this has advantages and disadvantages. if its wrong anywhere, it will hurt. if done right, the gun becomes parts of your hand and you can work the trigger finger independantly of the rest of the hand, allowing you to concentrate only on the trigger finger. if the gun shifts at all, the theory gors out the window. knowing your gun as well as i do, believe it or not, the factory grips are the best for that gun. buy a stock set. they have just enough contur to give the right feel. if you are looking for clay molds, whew....good luck. making grips to match hand prints is expensive. actually, some people take clay and stick it all over their grips in the contact points to help control and leave it there, caring less about appearances, more about function. a plain old bolt on adjustable grip base set is a very good start to do clay upgrades. becklmeyr and similar grips are good investments. it sounds like you have the base already. from there, its a personalized quest. stick molders clay on your grips and squeeze. cut off the access. make sure your mold is how you hold your gun. have some else cut the ooz off while you hold the gun. remember the old safari arms 45's that had that little middle finger ledge built into the front strap? ledges are good for 22, not good for 45. the recoil wears the finger out. sorry, i dont know any books or websites. maybe pop in over at www.usnst.org for more advice. tell em cpo ski ret sent you! let me know how it goes.
