For a straight copy (not a Valmet or a Galil) Zastava Arms in Yugoslavia or FEG in Hungary each produce outstanding examples of the Kalashnikov rifle. Interestingly enough I've never been all that impressed with the actual Soviet/Russian production AKs.

Bob890, if you would like some additional information on current AK's and manufacturers, you can go to my archived posts under AK History and check out the replies there, there are couple of good ones. 0 -
You might want to check out www.ak-47.net Kind of an information overload, but there's some good info on the different variants, mags, etc.
I have a SAM7 made by Arsenal, IMHO nicest postban ak I've seen so far.0 -
What Mark said.
I own an FEG - great.

Ditto the FEG Hungary ...
Excellent fit and finish, and the most beautiful blond wood with a distinctive grain I've ever seen ... on each and every example I've seen ... pre or post ban.

The FEG Has very nice fit and finish but so does the chinese varients.
A guy at the range had a Polytech legend milled chinese AK-47 (stamped AK-47 on the gun) this was the nicest one i have ever seen
next to the Valmet. Just My opinion[;)]

Ditto on the FEG I have one and it has performed flawlessly over the last year or so.
I measured it and cut it twice, and it's still too short!0 -
I wouldn't part with my milled Norinco MAK-90 for all the tea in err China.[:D]

I've had an FEG since 1987, they are excellent. The Yugo ones were good too, but harder to find. The current Bulgarian ones were never offered as a pre-ban, but are extremely well made and have the milled receiver. The Hungarian FEG and the Yugo AK's were exceptional AK's, but were stamped receivers only. Not that that should mean anything to most. You'd be hard pressed to wear out a stamped receiver or a milled. Even the pre-ban Chinese Norinco AK's, you will find to be noteably smoother than today's Romanians and also have a better fit and finish than the Romanians as well. I'm not trying to knock the Romanian guns, they "work" fine. Its just that they will never win any beauty contests. As with most things, if it is the "Cheapest" AK available, it probably isn't going to be the "Best" AK available. 0
