Mossberg expert?????
I looked at a Mossberg 500E at a local shop. Thought it might be the "camper" model as this one had a camo case, pistol grip, and a 18" bbl. But, how do I know someone hasn't just "built" this gun by cutting this bbl of and adding the pistol grip and camo case? Couldn't it just be a Slide Action Field with the bbl cut down?
How does one know for sure this one is a Camper?

Does it make a big difference? If the gun is in the configuration you want, who cares if it came this way or was converted?
One of the nice things about the 500 is the many variations Mossberg made over the years. I had a plain 18" model and I bought a 24" vent rib barrel for it. I sold the 18" barrel to my good friend Norman Dog who then wanted to swap buttstocks and forends with me because he preferred the smooth and I liked his checkered wood. So, we both completely changed our guns. His went from a sporting model into a defensive type and mine went the other way. I guess it would have been easier to just trade guns. But in the end did it matter what models the guns were when they started as long as you wind up with what you want?

Does it make big difference, are you kidding me???[:(] Lets say you collect a certain model of gun. The bbl lengths come in 28, 26, 24, and 20. Oh, but wait a minute, of the thousands of guns this model came out in, only 500 came with 20" bbls. You have searched high and low for the elusive 20". You have several nice 28's, 26's, and 24's, BUT the 20" has always eluded you.
Then, one day you come across the exact model you are looking for, yes you can barely contain yourself. It is the holy grail for your collection, the 20". Here it is in all its glory. But wait something doesn't look quite right. There is a slim chance that the bbl has been cut off to make it the 20". Maybe it used to be a 28, 26, or even a 24, but no, it measures 20", so it MUST be the one I've been waiting for. Nobody would have cut it off to make it one of 500 mfg. just to make an extra buck. Everybody that deals in guns is honest, right? WRONG!!
Hence my question, does anybody know how I can tell if it is a true camper model?
Wait a minute, SaxonPig doesn't care if it was built or not. So heres what I'll do. I'll buy the gun at the great price listed at the shop and turn around and sell it for what it is worth, well for what a "true camper" is worth, to SaxonPig. Because he doesn't care if it was a built gun or not. He doesn't care if somebody down the line modified this gun just to make a buck.
I'm sorry, SaxonPig, but I'm not the type of person to buy something if its configured how I want it even if I can get it real cheap. Who knows, I might fall on hard times and then I could make some money above and beyond what I paid for this gun and have some extra money for my house payment, truck payment or even grocerys to feed my family.
Oh, by the way don't forget to include 35.00 extra with your payment for this gun because it has the original camo case that was a option with this model.

BTW, cool flag on your posts. I did some research and found the Missouri flag, I'll include it in this post.

I don't know if I'd call a Mossberg 500 a collectable. [:D] And if you fall on hard times you still aren't gonna make much money off a Mossberg 500. [:D]
But a few questions might help you answer whether or not the barrel was chopped down.
Is there a front sight bead on the barrel? Is the diameter of the barrel at the muzzle the proper dimensions for a factory 18" barrel? Examine the end of the barrel closely, was it cut flat...does it have any cutting scratches at all or is the edges of the end of the barrel rounded and no tool markings?
