What can I put on bare metal to keep it from rusting but leave it that silver look?

Any type of coating that is transparent that keeps oxygen and moisture away from the surface of the metal.
To give specific products would require knowing what enviorment the metal would be exposed to.
What would work excellent indoors, wouldn't last 5 minutes outside.0 -
we in the gunsmithing business use a product called HOLD available from brownells. it is used to protect the metal from rusting prior to bluing 0 -
What kind of "metal" are you talking about? There are several metals and metal alloys.
Since you specify "rust" I would assume you are talking about carbon steel. If that is the case, about the only thing would be clear paint, or you could rub it with oil on a regualr basis. Everything else will change the color or texture in some way, nickel plate, chrome plate, phosphate coating, cadium plate, dry film lube, etc. These are all protective coatings that will change the color or texture. The other forms of protective treatments are controlled oxidation, such as blueing or browning, which are actually a form of rust itself, just a controlled form.
It there was a form of protective treatment that could be used on carbon steel that would not change it's appearance, it would be well known and popular.

Hello, clear coat will work, depending on what finish you want.

I believe clear coat is clear paint, which I already mentioned.

Easy tin it.
Take a propane torch and warm the steel up, put some silver solder on it and melt it onto the steel, wipe with a rag while it's hot to leave a thin layer on the steel. don't worry you don't have to have it too hot to get solder to bead up on the steel.
This is the old process used on cars to fix dents prior to bondo, after it was tinned lead was applied.
Might work for your application.

It is a henry lever action 22 rifle some may remeber the post I was talking about the bedliner. Well we got it down to bare metal and he likes the look of the silver and would like to keep it silver. As for the climate around here it gets pretty humid, ever been to East Texas. 0 -
In my last order from Brownells I got a flyer for a Novum Solutions product called Blue Wonder Armadillo. I saved the flyer because it sounded like it would work on a project I'm working on- an old Rem. 22 thatwas so rusty that I sandblasted it with glass beads. It left a nice silver stippled finish that I'd like to preserve. The flyer says that it's a polymer protectant that gives a dry hard shell that inhibits rust even in a salt water enviornment. Novum monitors this site so you could post a question directed to them or go to their web site. Their other products have worked very well for me, so I was going to ask them about it before I made my next Brownells order. Please let us know what you decide to use and how it works out. 0 -
Why not nickel plate it? There is a simple home shop kit available from Texas Platers Supply. I have used it many times, complete plating of pistols and also for touch up. Also available for silver, gold, brass, etc. 0
