Baised on my 1-12 30-06, I'd suggest 150gr and lighter. Perhaps somthing like the 125 Nosler BT over 47.5-51.5gr of W748 (assuming your not hunting deer, in which case I'd stick with the 150gr BT)

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.

    HeavyBarrel,

Below is the published information from Shilen's site. Remember that it is the length of a bullet as well as the weight that affects its' performance with a given twist rate. There is also a factor of velocity to consider with either smaller or larger cases. One of my 300 RUM's will shoot 190 grain bullets accurately and it has a 13" twist rate. I've also been shooting some 175 and 185 grain Bergers in my .308 Win. with a 12" twist. Check the websites of the bullet manufacturers to get the recommended twist for a specific bullet.

    From Shilen: .308
8" For bullets heavier than 220gr.
10" For bullets up to 220 gr.
12" For bullets up to 170 gr.
14"* For bullets up to 168 gr.
15"* For bullets up to 150 gr.

I've heard rate of twist arguments for the better part of 50 years. Conventional wisdom has always held that 1 in 12" twist should be the optimum twist for bullets 150 grains or light in a .30 cal. barrel. Problem is I have seen 1 in 12" barrels shoot very small groups with 180 grains bullets. Problem is the barrel doesn't know what its supposed to do. Matter of fact I have a 1930 Remington that has a 1 in 10" twist which mean it should be more accurate with 180 grain bullets than with 150 grain bullets but the exact opposite is true. More than twist is involved in a accurate barrel. I find the Shilen chart very interesting and it generally follows the conventional wisdom of the past--when you read the chart just keep in mind that it reads "up to" but is not weight specific beyond that. Have fun but be safe.
