Have not seen it as of this time, maybe next week. does anyone have any links to J.C.Higgins production calibers, etc. (I know they didn't produce any actual gun) but I'm trying to find out what he has for him and possibably the MFGR. I was awaere of the .22s and shotguns ,but the 348 threw me......HELP!!![:0] [:0] [:0]

sounds like a siames mauser that was converted to 348 win and stocked using a j c higgins buttplate. 0 -
None of the JC Higgins I ever saw or still see had extensive checkering.Probably restocked and rebarreled to 348.I doubt they ever sold any in that caliber in bolt action.--Alot of those guns were built on good FN Mauser actions and the receivers are stamped so.Only the barrels said JC Higgins. If the action says FN,it was probably restocked, rebarreled and they used the old buttplate on the new stock.--I used to buy them for the actions........[8D] 0 -
The only factory produced rifle that was ever chambered for the 348 Win cartridge was the Winchester Model 71, a heavy duty lever-action (a revamped Model 1886).

And the Browning model 71 which was a remake of the Winchester 71.--Made them around 1986-1987....................[8D] 0 -

[:D] [:D] [:D] Yep Bert ,yer right ,after the post i continued my search with my older reloading books ckg' data on the caliber, and found the 71 was the only mfgrd production rifle in that caliber (aside from the later short repro by Browning)I have sisce fwded the info. to the genbtlemean with my guess it was a rebarrled rifle with the JC butt plate, and asked for more info, stampingd etc. .told him i would like to see the rifle , Haven't heard back yet. Any one have any idea of the value ,ballpark , on the rebarrled gun asd such. i know this is WAY out on a limb witout more info..[V][:D] [:D] [:D]

My guess is that it is a model 71 Winchester on which the buttplate has been replaced by a J. C. Higgins buttplate. Since the .348 is a rimmed cartridge there would be some complications in making a bolt action rifle handle it through the magazine. My second guess is that it is a .308 Win caliber. 0 -
How could you expect to get a half-way close guess on the identification and value of this rifle with only these clues?
That's like asking the blind to lead the blind.
The most intelligent answer I can think of would be that it's an assembled rifle worth from $25 to $5,000.0 -
[:D] [:D] Update... it is a Mauser 98 in 358 caliber, not 348 extensive checkering serial #12722 I may get to see it this week ,this was just updated via email from the owner.IT IS NOT a Model 71 with a Higgin's butt plate ,read the post "BOLT ACTION" and I did not ask for a value I posted for info on links ect. to try and chase down the gun for the gentlemanSo if anyone has info one who may have made Mausers for Sears under the J.C.Higgins logo it might be a help in chasing down this critter. Thanks all.[;)] [:D]

[:0] I STAND CORRECTED. MY MISTAKE I did ask for value on a rebarrled gun in my second post. But that post is null as the gun in not a rebarreled gun it would seem , Sorry on the mistake . we are back to a 98 mauser in 358 with j.C.Higgins butt plate marking.[:D]
