I have the opertunity to by a 20 ga superposed and the serial number put the mfg. date in the salt wood time period. There is absolutly no indication of any rust that is usually found in these guns .What i was wondering is if it does have salt wood, should it have showed up by know or will it rear it's ugly head at some later date. It may have been restock by browning, but how would I tell?

Need has nothing to do with why we buy guns!

wherever metal touched wood, there will be pitting. if the gun was reblued, you should still see pits where it was buffed out. did you take off the stock and look at the receiver and trigger guts? if its a rust gun, your gun will look like it was left on a sandy beach and pitted like an old ww2 assualt ship abandoned in the surf. salt will suck into the wood grain and leave streaks in the grain. look for powder and grains of salt forming inside the receiver around the edges. even if the wood was changed, the receiver will continue to deposit old salt for a time. you could call the factory and see if they have record of a refit by serial number. personally, i'd pass on it.

THE SALT WOOD SHOWED UP WITHIN 1 OR 2 YEARS OF PRODUCTION (YOU DID HAVE TO LOOK FOR IT). IT EVERYTHING IS OK UNDER THE WOOD NOW YOU SHOULD BE HOME FREE.

    Hello j_n_l
I purchased a superposed 20ga. skeet & skeet a couple of years ago and it was in the "salt wood" range. I took the gun to the Browning repair facility that they still operate here in St. Louis Mo. and asked them to check it. The butt stock has XXX wood on it but the forarm is not that fancy, so I was concerned. They removed the stock, but we could not tell if it had been refinished. If it was it's an excellent job.
Another odd thing about the gun is that the barrel is marked 2 3/4" on the outside, but the Browning stamp under the barrel has an oval with 76 in the center. (76mm or 3") I had them check it at the same time and it is a 3' chamber. I still don't know what to think about it, so I just continue to enjoy shooting it.
    Taperloc.
