I'm not Richbug...but I can tell you about the Bersa Thunder 380. I have had one for 2 years now, and I love it. I average a box a week of shells through it, and have NEVER had a failure or ejection problem with any ammo I put in it (including Wolf and Silver Bear). The slide was stiff as a board for the first couple hundred rounds, but it has eased up now and it great. Trigger pull is a little stiff, but not too terribly bad. Your gunsmith buddy is right to a point. You do get what you pay for. But there is a BIG difference in a "cheap" gun and an "inexpensive" gun! I gave just over $200 for mine. It is the "duo-tone" version. In short, I love it! Where I go, it goes.

For Winchester-Mutt: Hey thanks for replying anyway. I didn't want to step on any toes asking the same question I think I asked months ago. I have the Bersa Calendar. That duo-tone really grows on you after a while. Anyway, The Walther I sold had a very stiff trigger, stiff slide, and shot high and right. I have an old French version, the Manurhin, and it shoots much better but can't get them anymore. Sooooooo, I'm at the gunstore and they want $560 for a new Smith Walther. But, if I can get one for what you paid, I can replace the gun for my wife and not feel cheated. I might have enough left over to get another pistol (Bersa Thunder .45?). I sure appreciate your post because you are helping to make up my mind!!!

I am not really familiar with the bersa, but they feel and look a lot like a refined version of the old Tangfolio GT-380. I had one of the GT-380's and sold it due to many problems, notably reliability. Most of the Italian mades guns are a good value. Once again, the Bersa is not a Walther, or even remotely close. A used walther tends to bring very near to new gun money, where as you will have a tough time finding someone to sell your bersa to for %50.

Notpars - I often avoid sticking my nose into discussions, but maybe this input will be of use. The owner of my favorite local gunstore, along with at least one gunsmith, stand behind the Bersa. I've asked several other experienced shooters and vendors about them, and the opinion has been 100% for them. I have two Bersas, .9 and .380. The .9 can be a handful, but this is a close range gun, anyway, not a full range shooter.

I bought a Bersa 380 for my wife and liked it so much I wound up taking it away from her. I LOVE it. Fits the hand well, accurate, AND has never jammed or anything - fired every round one after the other - I have ran several different brands of ammo through it and all worked well. You usually get what you pay for but I read in G & A about why the Bersa guns are less expensive is because the labor there is so low.

For NickCWinter: By all means join in. The days when I belonged to the "gun of the month club" are long over. I didn't want to sell the guns I sold. I am an older high school teacher working on my masters degree, making $7000 less than the district average, had another child a year and a half ago, my wife quit her job to take care of the two kids and I pay child support on two in Texas. In other words, I have to weigh every purpose very carefully. I don't want to have to sell a gun again and I don't want to by something cheesy that I won't be happy with...not to mention bet my life on. So I really really appreciate your input.

P.S. I hope the above autobiographical information wasn't too much or my tone unfriendly. I didn't want anyone to think I'm just cheap. Your input will be a big part of my decision so I owe you!

For Schotzi1: Input like your's as well as the others, will be vital to my decision. It used to be I could buy pretty much what I wanted but those days are over for now. I read the article you are referring to and have spent time in South America as well. Inflation, socialism, and stupid government regulations have devauled the peso (or whatever it is in Brazil) so much that many people/governments down south are desperate to get their hands on American dollars.

Your input is vital. Around here its is hard to find anything for sale other than Glocks and Berettas (some Rugers). Those are all good guns but I wouldn't mind holding a Bersa, Kahr, and so forth. So, your information will help.

Hope you don't mind, but I'm going to go off subject for a lil. I was looking at a recent issue of Shotgun News and saw that Sarco Inc. has Walther Manurhins for sale. I hear Nunn has one and loves his. I'm kinda tempted myself. Not sure on your price range but looks like they have a couple for $375. Check out:

I owned a Bersa thunder nine and was very happy with it. Never had a problem. I traded it off some time ago for something I no longer have.

I bought a Bersa 3 years ago, and still prefer it over my SW 38. No 380 or snubby anything is going to be accurite. But I've ran countless boxes through my bersa, and like the others have had little problems. Mine seems realy happy with win silvertips. IMHO you can't get a better gun for the money.
