SKS sporterized
I sporterized my SKS. Got a new stock and shaped it for a more comfortable fit and got a 1in extension. Got a metal cover plate over the gas piston, scope mount and scope, and 5 round magazine. I primed and painted the stock black and put a coat of clear on top. Looks great but the paint won't stick to the wood. Scratches right off easily. Now I have to try again. Anybody have any suggestions?
Also I would like to get a flash suppressor. Anyone know if they're hard to install, where to get etc. Thanks for your help!

Did you strip the wood first? If not try that. I like to use denatured alcohol. You might also try a black stain instead of paint since it goes into the wood instead of being on the outside.

Sounds like it still has some cosmoline on it. I'd sand it, clean it with alcohol as suggested, paint it black, and then clear coat it.
www.cheaperthandirt.com has a flash hider or was it a muzzlebrake that twists on and has a set screw.
If you got a new stock why did you paint it? There are many black plastic stocks out there cheap.

AS for the painting if you sanded to muck the paint has nothing to stick to... I would strip and clean again as stated above then run a rougher sand paper over it.I have also hade this prob on a 10/22 stock I tried to paint. Another thing to keep in mind is paint in very light coats(fog the paint) dont try to cover the stock in 1 or 2 coats.when I paint my stocks I can still see wood when putting on the 4th coat.Let the paint dry between coats (building up layers)
Now as for the flash hider I also used 1 from cheaperthandirt.com
the 1 I used was the double muzzle break and it uses a roll pin to hold it on.(tinsion pin) and required drilling.
sounds like you are on your way with a great project! if you want to save that scope I would also suggest a shell deflector they do come out of the chamber hard and fast and will damage that scope.the steel cases are the worst!! hope this helps and good luck!0 -
Thanks for all your replies. Yes I sanded it very well as i took quite a bit of wood off to make it thinner on the grip, forearm and stock. I got the stock free from my neighbor who bought a folding stock. Not sure what that wood is but it is as close to balsa wood as you can get. I'll try your suggestions and see what happens. Thanks again. 0 -
Rather than painting it, why don't you strip it down and stain it in black walnut, it'll be really dark yet still show the woodgrain, really pretty.

I was thinking of that. It does have nice grain. 0
