favorite S&W revolver
I am looking for a revolver in 22lr and one in 45 colt. The 22 will probably come first. People rave about the trigger and "smoothness" on the Smith and Wesson revolvers and I think I should own atleast one.
Some say the new ones aren't as good as the old ones, true?
What model in each caliber would you recommend for mostly target shooting and plinking with some hunting possibly mixed in?
In the 45 I would like a heavier revolver to soak up some recoil and steady my hand.
Any "you should look for ..." or "stay away from ..." type advice would be appreciated.
Thank you

For the 22 - Model 17 with a minimum of 6" barrel. Personal preference is toward 8 3/8 inch barrel and pre-1992 mfg.
For the 45 - Model 25-5 with minimum 6" barrel. Again personal preference is to the 8 and 3/8 inch barrel.
Rational for longer barrel is that it provides a better sight plane which helps improve ability to hit distant targets. Also in the M25 it is added weight to improve control.

I would look around for a S&W 625 Classic in 45 Colt. Its a 5" barrel and handles very nice. The 45 Colt is my all time favorite revolver round.

Yep, would have to agree with the 25/625 model, they are beautiful big-bore revolvers[8D]

I have a 17-4 with an 8 3/8" barrel and find it a little long. I found I prefer a 4" to 5" barrel max. I have a diamondback in 6" that handles a little better. 0 -
S&W 63 in .22lr or the 651 in .22mag. Both guns are stainless,4" barrel, out of production but can be found. I have both, they feel great, shoot great and very easy on the eyes!

I don't think that you can go wrong with an S&W K-22/M17. I have an example with a 6" barrel and while I agree that my Diamondbacks have a better fit and finish, I find that the S&W .22 out shoots the Colts. Your choices for a .45 revolver are pretty much limited to the S&W Model 25 series or a Colt Anaconda and once again I'd give the nod to the Smith.
