I have always wondered, what is different about firearms that
were manufactured by, lets say Marlin or Mossberg for different
hardware companies to sell, like Montgomery Wards, Sears, Coast
    to Coast..etc..etc..

The firearms bear the hardware stores name, but you can trace
them back to one of the regular firearm manufactures models..

Is there any difference in craftsman ship or type of wood used
in the stocks? Are the materials used different than were used
    on the regular models?

In some cases Manufactures would give their lower grade guns the Dept store name. But I would not say the gun is of less quality,I have seen many fine shooting store brand names and own a few. This type of gradeing system is now in use with Wolly World guns in most cases. It may only be a very slight nick etc that inspectors did not pass on to the best grade. The gun may be less than perfect but more than likely you will never find any problem.I was told this information from a Store manager, and by a fellow Police Officers son who works at Wolly World.HTH

Many of the "branded" or "Hardware" guns were contracted for in fairly large lots, much like the way W-M buys stuff today. Thus the mfg. would give a good discount. Sometimes the stocks would be of lower or plainer grade wood. And some of the guns would have cosmetic flaws that were minor and had no effect on the function of the gun.

It's not that much different today, while Sears no longer sells firearms they sell other branded merchandise. Some made to their specifications other just volume purchases with their label.

Any of the "branded" guns in good shape will shoot right along with the "parent" guns and typically neither will have much in the way of a collector base, but they are good firearms.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

Usually cheaper plain wood. polychoke. Not of less quality just plain jane. The value is some 10 to 25% less or so.
