Cartridge ID Help
I just got back from an auction, where I bought a box of 30-06 cartridges. All M1 ball, all in 5 round stripper clips or Garand clips. Need help with the history and pedigree. Headstamps are: FA 34,LC 43, DEN 43, DM 43, EW 43 {these have black tips}, SL {or 7S}43, DM 42. I also got some boxed ammo;Denver Ordance Plant, head stamped DEN 42, {so I know where they are from}, and St. Louis Ordance Plant, head stamped SL 43. Some of the boxed stuff is unopened, and all boxes are full. Any idea as to collector value, or is it just shooter stuff? Thanks for any help you can send my way! Also have some stuff that I have been shooting head stamped 88 30-06, and 60A 30 58. Anyone know where its point of origin is?

FA 34 = Frankford Arsarnel 1934, LC 43 = Lake City 1943, DEN 43 = Denver A. 1943, DM 43 = DeMoines A. 1943, EW 43 = EuClair, Wisconsin(I think?) black tip means armor piercing bullet, SL 43 = St. Louis A. 1943, DM 42 = DesMoins 1942, DEN 42 = Denver A. 1942, SL 43 = St. Louis A. 1943. The others are evidently foreign ammo which I know nothing about head stamps at all. The WW II ammo is beginning to move into the collectable market-how strong and at what price I don't really know--I'm a shooter , not a collector. Good luck. 0 -

Pinhead is correct on the arsenals (although it's Eau Claire - not a biggie to anyone outside of Wisconsin). The FA 34 are M1 Ball as you identified them, but the balance of the ball rounds are M2 (standard gilding metal jacket) or M2A (gilding metal clad steel jacket - check with a magnet if you care) - these other arsenals never loaded the M1 and it was declared obsolete in 1944. The EW 43 are M2 AP. The "60A 30 58" headstamp is factory 60A, .30 caliber (19)58 from Taiwan. The "88 30-06" was made by Igman Savod of Yugoslavia - probably an export contract loading for a Canadian firm. All the American rounds listed are corrosive primed. The EW 43 AP will bring some premium for being from a short-lived arsenal and AP, call it $1 a round or better if they are in nice shape. The rest is common as dirt from the viewpoint of collecting. Even with CMP and exports to Allies following the war, there are still large amounts of the ball ammo in circulation (CMP is still releasing it the last I knew). If your sealed boxes are super nice, near mint, maybe $20. Lesser condition, there's still a lot of it out there.
