colt 1860 richards conversion
This subject hung around for several days and got padlocked for good reason - lack of info. I took my Richards apart (evrything inside the receiver) to try to answer the question of how to disassemble the loading gate. The loading gate is mounted on the conversion ring. It pivots on a pin the end of which can be seen, just the edge of it where the conversion ring interfaces the recoil shield portion of the receiver. To remove the gate requires removal of the conversion ring which I was unable to do. It is apparently retained by the cylinder center pin which is screwed into the receiver and staked in place. Removal would require drilling out the stake pin which I was not willing to do. Also checked the same thing on the Richards Mason conversion which is identical. For info, my Richards has the center fire pin mounted on the hammer. Some have firing pin installed in the conversion ring, with possibly some difference in the loading gate. These guns were made at a time of many production changes being made within the same model. Hope this helps.

I need to repair the loading gate. Anyone know how to disassemble one of these? Spring loaded lock appears to be broken. 0 -
If your not familiar with the full disassembly and re-assembly of the revolver take it to a gunsmith rather than fiddle with it and run the risk of increasing the repair bill.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
none of the so called smiths around here, and so called experts can tell me or explain how the loading gate is removed. Thanks for the reply. 0 -
Hmmmm...try this web site:
www.logcabinshop.com
Family business for over 50 years, knowledgeable folks and maybe then can put you on to a source for getting takedown info. or maybe you can arrange for them to fix it for you.
Hope it helps.

Thank you. I have Emailed them. I can disassemble the unit of all parts except the loading gate. So far no one can tell me, or show me how this part was installed and held in place. 0 -
contender man. No help from that web site. Said they are not familiar with that conversion. Still searching for an answer. 0 -
Geri,
Is this an original or a modern recreation/replica. If the latter, who is the mfg. ?
Using on line searches I can find no sources for assembly/parts drawings of the original.

Contender this is an original. Thanks for the input. 0 -
That's what I was afraid your answer would be ... and of course that means high $$$ revolver and repairs have to be "kosher" or the value tanks.
Have you considered someone like Doug Turnbull. Suggest that you consider contacting them, beyond that I'm out of "brilliant" ideas.
Web site for Doug is: www.turnbullrestoration.com
Sorry I couldn't help you more.[:(]

U.S. Patent drawings accompanying the patent should show what the parts look like and maybe some description of how they go together. 0
