Most Accurate Semi Rifle
I was wondering what is the most accurate semi auto rifle available for sale? I am also taking suggestions on caliber as well. My object is to hit a target at 1000 yards or better (1000 yds. with scope - 300/400 yds. with normal sights).

The M1 Garand in 30-06 would be superior to the M-14 style rifle (including M1A) at 1000 yards and better, given they are set-up identically. That is, a Match grade M1 Garand vs a Match Grade M1A. The 308 cartridge looses stability as it goes sub-sonic, this happens just short of the 1000 yard mark, like at 950 yards or so. The 30-06 retains more velocity and more stability at these ranges.
Some bullets would be better at 1000 yards than others, you would want to choose one with a good balistic coefficient. The 308 is reasonably good if it has such a bullet at these ranges. The 30-06 would be better.
You would want to choose a caliber that retains a high velocity at these ranges, no doubt about that. As I said, bullets loose stability as they go sub-sonic, which is why the semi-auto .308 is not the best choice.
I would think the Barrett M82A1 would unquestionably be the absolute best choice, talking at ranges of 1000 and over. No doubt about it, for the question you ask. M82A1 would beat them all.

the barett semi-auto 50cal is probably the most accurate semi-auto but that is out of the price range of most, the springfield M1A is probably your best bet. 0 -
Since you have not mentioned a budget for this project and only asked for the top level of accuracy in a semiauto, I'd suggest that you locate a Walther WA2000 sniper rifle in .300 Win Mag...with this rifle 1,000 meter shots will be easy. For half the cash of the Walther you could buy an HK PSG 1 perscision marksman's rifle, but my opinion is that 1,000 meters is really beyond the optimal range of the 7.62mm round for any purpose other than target shooting and then using only the carfeully selected bullets/loadings as boeboe mentioned. You could knock a few thousand of the price of the PSG1 and purchase the Barrett, also suggested by boeboe, and your problems with accuracy, range and knock down power would be solved in a heart beat. By the way, if you actually live in California Matthew, the M1A is going to be pretty much your only choice since everything else mentioned (Barrett, Walther, HK) is an assault weapon under state law.

From the Fulton Armory site, FAQ:
Clint, which chambering should I use with my new M1 barrel: .30-'06 or .308 Win?
Theoretically, the .308 has an ever so slight advantage due to the decreased case volume (the powder does not move around much in a .308 case; more modern powders allow less to be used for similar performance. In the .30-'06 case, the powder has lots of room to lay a bit differently on each shot fired). However, in the DCM/CMP Service Rifle course of fire, such "differences" evaporate for most shooters. However, at long range (e.g., 1000 yards) the .30-06 catridge offers a real advantage, though, not remarkably.
On the other hand, the .30-'06 cartridge has the wonderful ability to offer a little bit more power at reduced chamber pressure levels. Though it seems odd that the .30-06 has less chamber pressures than the .308 and yet a bit more "power," it's nonetheless true. And, since it's the original caliber, it works!
The real difference is cost & availability of ammo. The .308 will be easier to find, and less expensive. However, you may think a long action should be fed "long ammo"!
In the final analysis, it's really a personal choice. Either selction will be the "right one."
Converting a .30-'06 Garand to .308 does require a barrel change, and a slight modification to the ejector spring (not essential but a prudent thing to do). A spacer block in the mag well (to prevent loading .30-06 cartridges) is a really good idea.

I believe I'd have George Gardner build me something on the new Bushy BAR-10,so as to use that dirt cheap FAL mags.
Arguement could be made for 260,7-08 and 308. Or really twist an arm and have him build a 300WSM.......................0
