According to the Winchester Dates of Manufacture (Madis); in 1927 the serial numbers reached 11,258 and later records were lost. However they list a total production of 23,616. I can find nothing further on this particular firearm regarding serial numbers.

Ronald--Appreciate the reply.According to the Blue Book, they were only made from 1919 to 1924.If this is true, the 1927 date doesn't make sense.???????

I was not around when these guns were manufactured so I must make reference to the materials I have on hand. Upon checking out the newest edition of the Blue Book it states that the later production model 20 guns were also chambered for the 3" 410 cartridge; therefore, as the 3" 410 was developed by Winchester and introducted about 1934 that means the Model 20 was still being producted at that time even if in small numbers. Now, 1934 is quite a long ways from 1924 and as the records are said to have been lost where do we get definate information? And one thing I have learned from many years of dealing with Winchester is that a lot of the information gathered doesn't make sense; however, Mr. Madis tried his best to provide us with correct informtion.

The first Md 20s hit the warehouse in March of 1919. It had a 2 1/2 in chamber. The manufacturing of this gun did stop in 1924, however they continued to assemble them in 1925-27. the last of them left the warehouse in 1931. But according to G. Maddis they continued to make these from 1927-1935 for export. So I concurr that the later ones were chambered for 3 in shells. They even came with checkered stocks and stainless steel barrels as options. My book shows 1927 ended with serial number 11258. So yours would fall into the category of being made for "export". If yours has checkered wood and or a stainless steel barrel, you would have a very rare one and would definately command a premium price. A gunsmith can measure the chamber in about 30 seconds if he has a chamber guage. Hope this helps. Regards Dave
