Feed problems with Remington 74
Took my Remington 74 in .30/06 out the other day for the first time since I bought it last month. I have the factory Remington 4 round mag and two after-market 10 rounders. For some reason, when using the 4 round mag, it will not feed the first round. When using the 10 rounders, it will not feed the first four or five rounds. If I load the mags with fewer rounds, it will feed fine. Any idea as to why it will not feed from a full mag????

I don't have the 74, but in my experence with mags that won't feed, the first round sits too flat and the point won't hit the feed ramp high enough to feed into the chamber. This could be from too much spring tension, or from the feed lips being too close together at the front of the mag. I've bent the lips a little, and I've filed on them. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION! YOU CAN RUIN THE MAG BY DOING EITHER! I could be wrong about your problem, I responded only because no one else offered any suggestions. Please don't ruin anything because of my advise, I am not an expert. This is just what I did as a last resort. The 10 round mag never did work right in my 740, or my 742. But it does work in my 760.

I may give it a try on one of the mags. Don't worry...if I ruin a mag, it will be my own fault.
