Browning 16 ga....need help
I have a Browning, 16 ga., FChoke, special steel shotgun. I have not fired it in 20 years. Since I do not use it I might as well try to find it a home...outside of mine!
There is one on auction on this site now and from the looks of the pictures my 16 is quite a bit nicer than the one on auction. Of all the screw heads only a few show slight marks in the screw slot. Wood is nice no cracks and checkering on the pistol grip style butt-stock is clear and distinct. Bluing is okay. Side of barrel reads MADE IN BELGIUM. I have no idea how old this shotgun is! This 16ga., has ton's of proof marks and serial number is: 67953
Sad thing is I don't have a clue as to a fair market value...can you help?
Thank you in advance for any assistance in this delicate matter...
You can email me direct: gunpowder@cox.net or kenc@prestox.com

Michael, we'd like to help you with this, but I, for one, need a model name. Special Steel is not a model. Is it an Auto-5, Citori, Superposed, or what? If you don't know, then give us a link to the one you mentioned is on the auction, so that we can look at it and make a model determination.[:)] 0 -
Here is where to look at one that is exactly like the one I have posted about:

Michael...
What you have is a Browning A-5. Are there two (or three) digits above the serial number? If not, your shotgun will date back to the late 1920s (about 1927/1928). Graded condition is the key to determining the potential value... can you post pictures of it?
The fellow trying to sell the gun you pointed us to, is awfully wishful at his "Buy It Now" price. That gun is only worth about $300 at best.

Hi, Michael--Well, if your gun is over 20 years old, and looks exactly like the one on the auction, but is in much nicer condition, let's say in 95% condition, according to the latest Blue Book it is worth about $375-400 top dollar. If it has a solid rib on the barrel you can add $75, and if it has a vent rib you could add another $100. That is for a standard model Auto-5. There was one other possibility which was a model called the "Sweet Sixteen" that would be worth $625 with a plain barrel in 95%, $825 with a solid rib, and $950 with a vent rib. I haven't seen one for several years, and don't remember if they say "Sweet Sixteen" on them or not (I think that they do), but they were a little lighter than the standard model and usually had a gold plated trigger. But, if yours is exactly like the picture, you're probably in the $375-400 range. The guy trying to sell his for over $700 has been smoking those funny cigarettes. 0 -
The "sweet sixteen" is on the receiver, but I bet you got the "heavy weight" regular style. AGREE with the group, NO WAY, NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE BUY IT NOW. I n my area a shop would ask 350. and take less. If yours is the really old one that takes the 2-9/16 ammo, even less IMO. nambu 0
