single shot rifle
I am thinking about adding a single shot rifle to the safe. Will primarily carry it during deer season when I am walking. Looking for ideas on something fairly inexpensive(less than $250) in a caliber that will do the job on whitetail out to 200-250 yards. I am considering 6.5x55,270,308, and any others below 7mag and above 243 as I already have those. As always thanks for your replies.

A New England single shot would fit the bill. 0 -
Yes the NEF line is an excellent shooting line for way under $250.00. Some come with sights and some with scope base. They are very accurate also. Also come in wood or sythetic stocks. They should go anywhere from $200-$250.00 price range.
God gave us all a gift. Have you found yours yet ?0 -
take a look at the new mossberg ssi-one...i have one in .243 and one in .308 and the quality seems to be much better than the nef's..mine are tack driver's and the fit and finish is very nice...nice walnut stocks and checkering...comes with the scope mount and the price on these are comming down...bought mine at galians for 229.99 0 -
If you have to stay in that price range then yes go with a NEF. I'd suggest waiting, saving more money and buying a Ruger No. 1 though. If you look hard you can find some in the high 400 or mid 500 range.

I have a Ruger #1 in .300 mag with a Leupold VX-11 and love it, but it's a little heavy for a walk around the woods. I don't know if the non mags are any lighter, but it is a good trade for the SUPERB accuracy of the rifle. Don't forget a TC Contender or Encore. They both have excellent rifle setups. Either way, one shot needs to be the kill. Don't skimp on price when it comes to accuracy.

New England Firearms makes 2 single shot models currently that I have had hands on experience with, one being the Pardner and the other the Survivor. Stay away from the later, my buddy has one and you had 3 barns in a line the only way you would hit one is to aim in the opposite direction. It also has a really uncomfortable snake charmer stock that with rip you apart after a box of rounds.
The Pardner on the other hand is more comfortable and seems to have a tighter hit pattern but I have had to replace the firing pin in it before on account of it snapping off.0
