Tapwater, I'm sitting here looking at the requirements and if you did do not have prior military service, member of the law enforcement community, , instructor or coach status, or over 60 years of age I don't see any Legal way around the requirements--short of traveling to a match on your off time or vacation. I don't think I would try the "mail in" method as uncle sam doesn't have a very good sense of humor when it comes to guns --might wind up in the pokey.

Pinhead, I sure don't want to cut corners or pull some kind of scam. But really, I know that I read of of a gun club that accepted out of state members and verified "on your honor" target scores to qualify for the DCM/CMP program...'Course, gov. may have squashed this route..I don't see that it's a scam though, I paid for that M1. And the lathe it was made on, and the truck that transported it, etc., etc....Not to mention my uncle's life...I'm willing to fork over $500 for something that I ALREADY own...Just cause I shoot some holes in paper for more $ makes it OK ???

the way i got mine was i had to be a member of an nra affiliated club that shot service rifle match. once i shot a match where scores were recorded, i sent in the paperwork with all the data attached. i then had to go thru a background check and fingerprinting. since i was ACTDU at the time, all i did was send them my current profile with all that data on it. i then paid the fee for the gun, and it was sent to me in the mail. yep, in the mail. this was 1994. you might want to stop in at the cmp website for more info. or, go to: www.usnst.org and ask one of the officials via email OR post a question on the site. tell em retired PR chief ski from suffolk sent you!

Thanks ski...I know all the hoops to jump through, 'cause I shot a DCM qual. course many years ago just to qualify for a purchase..Too bad that funds got tight and I never followed through... I simply don't agree with the politics of the only range within reasonable driving distance. Plus I just don't have the two afternoons free that it took to fire the course last time...If a club could offer a one time fee/membership to qualify, it would go a long way toward reaching their funding goals...They would at least get the $ from us who have no other need nor desire to become long term members..

    Earl,
You qualify by virtue of Active Duty. Join and club and send in your money (Yes, a little more to do for you humorless types).
Just check the CMP website for complete info.

The only stickler is the requirement to have shot a match course of some kind..The only affiliated club within reasonable distance just doesn't offer anything within my work schedule. It seems like I've heard of a club out east somewhere that would accept "mail in" target scores as proof of participation. Anyone have any ideas for us who don't live near a range/club ???Thanks

I called them about the same thing. You dont have to shoot a match course. You do however have to have a letter from a gun instructor or equal stating that you can handle a weapon and that he saw you shoot without doing anything stupid. Good luck

Tapwater, I don't know how you got out of my answer that I was accusing you of trying to pull a scam. I went back to your original question and then reviewed my answer and I still don't. You asked what I thought was a simple question and asked for advice. I gave you the best advice I could and I have no reason to change it. I retired several years ago from a company that among other things produced food preservatives. Some of those preservatives used pure grain alcohol-yes drinking alcohol. I was the man responsible for being audited by the BATF as to the usage. To make a long story short I learned the hard way not to try to make sense or joke with govt. menions. I mean when a slight discrepancie of 3 lbs out of a total usage of 800,000 lbs in a years time caused a major investigation, I say dot all the I's and cross all the T's. You would not believe the paperwork and explanation, the downright accusations over a miniscule amount of alcohol. So you do what you want to, I was only trying to give you the benefit of my experience. If I can save anyone from going thru what I did, i will.

Pinhead, sorry if I sounded as if I was trying to defend against an accusation...That was not my intent..You gave good advice, for which I'm in your debt...mea culpa

after giving my advice and reading all the others, why do i get the impression that all it was was a person wanting advice on how to get around the cmp ropes? cmp isnt a retail store and it has no obligation to give out what the customer desires on demand. they arent in business to supply a product. they have every right to be selective in who they give their product to. if not, every wholesale gun buyer would clean them out and put the profits in their own pockets and leave cmp without a medium to encourage shooting. therefore, whatever their rules are, you abide by them. am i missing something? thus, whatever rules are in place should be there. and the military and the vets do deserve it the most, simply for being willing to put their life on the line so others can pursue life, freedom and prosparity without the danger involved. and like one poster said, if you want one bad enough, just buy one thats already out there. personally, i get the impression people buy them just to pocket a quick profit anyway. its about 'self gain' most of the time. not shooting or enjoying it and thanking the supplier for offering fine guns cheap. take no offense, none was intended. i just hope some will go away more educated. regards....

Ski, Pin, and all, reading the thread from top to bottom, I see how I sounded, and can certainly understand why I deserved a brow beating....I believe the CMP rules are quite generous, and don't want to circumvent them in any way. That was never my intent...I can buy a Garand any day, but would rather support the program. We all sometimes have our ramblings misconstrued...Just my turn I guess...[B)]

Once you do get one, you'll want another one, and another one, and another one.....it's a 'neverending wanting.'

I wasnt trying to take any shortcuts either. I live in a small town without any real ranges nevermind target matches. I explained this to them. I then told them that I had a friend that was a firearms instructor for the military who would be willing to witness me shoot. They said that would be fine. I was just passing on info....

Thank you Larry...Any bit of info / help is greatly appeciated. Having a C&R, I wouldn't think of bringing any undue attention to myself...Always try to play by the rules, but it never hurts to ask questions about proper procedure...Let's let this drop now, 'cause the good Captain has let it run its' course, and I think we all understand what the point was...Thanks all...& I hope no hard feelings......Dale & the She-Devil..[|)]

Tapwater, I certainly took no offense, just trying to make sure I gave none. I am sorry if I gave you the wrong impression. You see, I got to learn something out of all this.
Thanks to "gun-runner" for his info. Anytime I get to learn something I count it a good day.
