loading for a lady
Give me your opinion, like you won't anyway! Have a older lady wanting a 4" 38/357. Probably ending up with a Ruger GP-100SS. She wants for protection and a feeling of security. She knows how to shoot, been thru civilian training at the police range, etc. But doesn't go out every weekend to practice. Maybe a couple times a year. I'm thinking of loading some 38 +P rounds, with 95gr JHP so the recoil won't knock her hand off and she won't be intimidated to shoot/practice with what she would carry. And the HV lightweight bullet would do the job at the higher velocity. On the other hand I could down load a 38 or 357 with a 160gr JSP or LRNFP traveling around 900fps and have a larger mass bullet which would probably do the same job. Any suggestions?

Welcome jimbo1096 to GB For self defense aginst humans I would go with the 38 special glasser safty slug. She could prctice with any 125gr 38 special. Also a 3 inch S&W may be better than the GP100. my 2 cents.

gap, Thanks for the input I just like to reload and she's my sister. I really tried to get her to haul around my 45colt but she said it would rub a hole in the bottom of her purse. 0 -
never never never use reloads for self defense. The DA of what ever juristicion you are in will do a number on you in court if you ever use one aginst a bad guy. Practice with the reloads use glasser safty slugs for defense. Trust me on this one. [8D]

I think a heavier bullet would better suit self defense needs.With the 38 I'd go with 125gr loaded to mid 900fps range.Use a premium bullet.[8D] 0 -
Reload practice ammo for her, but use commercial ammo for defense or carry load. If your sister uses it and you loaded the ammo, both of you are going to find yourself knee deep in something that is a long way from roses.
So much good ammo out there today. Glaser has been suggested, also there is Federal HydraShock, Gold Dot, MagSafe, RBCD etc., etc. as for a carry piece the Ruger may be a mite heavy, but whatever it is if shes packin it in a purse, bob the hammer. Also, for her birthday or Christmas buy her a purse designed for carry use.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
How about a 3" Chief? The 148gr lead HP I believe has the best record for 38 SPL. Magsafe or Glaser could be the first round. She could practice with wadcutter target loads. 0 -
practice with downloads and load the gun at night with full loads. 0 -
I got my 80yr. old mother a .38 special with 4" barrel-stainless. I bought her some 110 gr. jacketed hollow points for practice and Glazers for home defense. I'm thinking about getting her a little 410 shotgun cutting the barrel to 19" with open bore to replace her .38 as she is having eyesight problems now and doesn't see well enough to use sights properly. Inside a house shotguns and birdshot are hard to beat for defense. 0 -
I agree with above to NEVER use reloads for self defense. However, for short barrel guns I have found the 125 gr. jacketed and 110 gr. jacketed bullets with a light load of Clays to be very good (some may complain about the burn time for clays, but I've never had that problem)in both .38 and .357. Had very good luck with factory Hydroshock at the range, but many newer rounds exist. I believe you can buy most new defense rounds in packs of 5-10 for trial. 0 -
It has been said before,,,, but it can't be said enough.
DO NOT USE RELOADS FOR SELF DEFENSE
If you don't know or agree with why, just accept it.
ACCEPT IT AS GOSPEL
If we do not hang together we will certainly hang separately.0
