    Accurate: Hammerli 208S
    Tough: Glock
    Versatile: 1911

Now if you are looking for ONE to do all, I'll vote for a mid-sized Les Baer 1911. It is more accurate than 95% of the owners, excellent quality and worksmanhip, small enough to carry and utterly reliable.

    Welcome.

You didn't mention the type of shooting you want to get into, but since you put an emphasis on accuracy we'll go with 'bullseye style'.

Next you are just starting out so there will be a learning and improvement curve.

Within the latitudes of what you've given us to go on I would suggest that you don't start out with the high end stuff as you may find that you are unfortunately one of those folks that just can't shoot at the competitive levels that need custom hardware. Not an insult to you or what your yet to be proven abilities are, just a fact based on almost 50 years of competing in one form or another.

My suggestion to you is a mid-range 22 along the lines of a Ruger MkII slab side, Browning Buckmark Target, or Smith & Wesson 22 A or S
because with any of those pistols you will have an intrinsic accuracy that you can begin to develop your skills with, plus inexpensive ammo so you can practice a lot without excessive expense. Then when/if you reach the limits of that pistol move on up.

If you want to start a little higher in price then maybe the new Kimber rimfire or a Smith & Wesson Mdoel 41 would work.

Now if you are planning on moving into the 1911 platform the Kimber rimfire may be best.

I do not recommend that a person start out w/ a major caliber pistol because the learning curve is compounded by recoil management. Skills developed on a 22 platform translate directly to the larger calibers where you are then faced with managing recoil.

As for pistols I have shot ... of those mentioned the only one I have not shot is the new Kimber as I have a Marvel 45 - 22 conversion unit.

You are embarking on a sport that can bring lifelong enjoyment and I wish you success.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

Boy, what a quick way to start a war. Contender Man gave you a very reasoned response, and he is correct. Start with a basic .22 as he mentioned and gradually work your way up the line in caliber and power size. Don't move up in size either way until you can stay on a 6" paper plate at 25 yards consistantly-off hand. Then your ready to think about going up. My thoughts anyway. Welcome to the shooting world-you'll love it.

The model P210 9mm from SIG would probably be your most accurate.

You want a Gun Built like a tank but accurate i would have to say eather a Magnum Research Desert Eagle in 357mag,44mag or 50AE
The other would be a Magnum Research Baby Eagle in 9mm,40S&Mor 45ACP
or if you want a Competition pistol i would say a Entreprise tournament shooter model (1,11,111)
    Hope this helps[:)]
