Don't sand. We need to know what type of finish you need to remove--shellac, oil, poly, etc.

It's an old model contender. Looks to be oil.

    ContenderMan, It's oil, right?

On checkering I use a good stiff tooth brush and Formby's Finish Remover or Strip-ez that I get from Wal-Mart. Let it soak just a little first -- at least 15 minutes and then go to work with the tooth brush. Don't get in too big of a hurry and get rough with it, checkering can be damaged pretty easily sometimes. Rinse between coats(you may need more than one application) with mineral spirits or acetone. I usually use Tru-Oil for a finish but Lin-Speed works fine too, just a little slower drying. I like to use oil because you can repair small scratches so easily on oil finishes. By the way, a soft tooth brush is a great way to put the oil back in the checkering also. Good Luck.

never sand checking! to refinish stock: soak the wood in the tub overnight in (warm not hot) bath water and oily hair shampoo. the finish will all come the surface and look white. let it dry for a few days or even a week, to allow the grain to reshrink. take a scribe or a small pin and reline the checking.pop out the old finish. use a magnifying glass. tape off the finished checking. sand and finish your wood. take off tape. using no filler and stain only, dabb the checking. done. checking isnt suposse to be finished, just rough. use truoil refinishing kit.
