Welcome Jake. This can be a controversial subject. Many believe in a particular ritual of so many rounds, clean. So many more rounds, clean. After over 40 years of shooting I feel the only harm that can happen to a barrel is heat or negligence..Never fire any gun so rapidly that the bbl glows red[8D]And scrub it with a brush after a days shooting. In a 22 just watchout for lead buildup.

    Love them Pre-64's!!!!-Bob

thanks for the advice on that one i have heard that whole shoot two times and clean the barrel, and shoot 100 shots through it at least. but once again thanks for the advice i am still open for other opinions.

For competition I'd probably use the CCI or Speer Match grade ammo.

Ditto on what rldowns3 said on ammo.I have also had good luck with the Federal Match ammo.I think there is better stuff but accuracy costs money, just depends on how well you want to shoot and what your particular gun likes as they all have favorites.-- As far as bbl break in goes, you'll get as many different answers as there are people that you ask.-- I will tell you this for what it's worth.I have two of the Ruger factory hvy bbl target guns that I bought new.One is stainless and one is blue.I broke one in very carefully and the other I shot the living s%#t out of and just cleaned regularly when done shooting and they both shoot about the same.---You decide.........Good Luck...[8D]

I have one more question though what is the great thing about "match grade ammo" what makes it any more accurate. i have tried some in a remington 552 BDL "speedmaster" and some of the shots misfire and most are all over the target. Also once again thanks for the reply 2 my topic.

I agree that CCI mini-mag works best in alot of 10/22s; however, mine begs for remington Match/Target green tag. It shoots CCI good enough, but it shoots green tag much better.

AllAmerican: The match grade ammo is designed to be more consistent therefore moe accurate once sighted in for it.Regular rimfire ammo is notorious for being inconsistent and is not held to such quality control when primed and charged, etc. That's how they sell it so cheap.Keep in mind that some brands are not as high of quality as others just like anything else you buy.Try a few different brands with different type and weight bullets before you stock up.Some guns like jacketed bullets, some like plain lead, etc.Make sure when you test them you shoot from a steady rest and not offhand to remove more of the human factor.--Sounds like your speedmaster doesn't like the load you tried. They all have favorites.Don't give up,just search a little more.Besides,it's all fun.......Good Luck......[8D]

In my experience, .22 rimfire rifles tend to be picky on which ammo they prefer. I'll pick up a box of every brand and type of ammo I can locate, from match loads to bulk stuff sold by the plastic bucket, then shoot them all for groups. Once I determine the best shooting ammo for a particular rifle I'll go back where I got it and buy as much of the same lot number as I can.

Surprisingly, I've found that in some rifles the cheap-charlie stuff will outgroup the more expensive match ammo.

I'm not a smallbore specialist and am at a loss on why this occurs, but it works.
