The worth of guns ...
About 10 years ago, my grandfather gave me three guns. They are all in good condition, and I have done some research on them, but can't really find what they are worth. So, I was hoping I could lay out the info here and see what the experts think.
Gun #1:
Savage 250-3000
Serial Number: 181691
Year of manufacture: 1916
I shot this for the first time today and was pleasantly surprised. The gun has a scope that I am assuming was added and has a few nicks in the stock, but nothing terrible. It is a single shot (or else I am too stupid to find the magazine) but I was also wondering if Savage put out an add on magazine.
Gun #2:
Winchester 16 gauge shotgun (Model 12)
Serial Number: 568297
This is the one I know least about, but the general comments are as follows: 2 _ full choke, nickel-steel barrel, pump action
Gun #3:
Winchester 30-30 (Model 94)
Serial Number: 2209474
Year of manufacture: 1956
I have used this one occaisionally for some target practice, but again have no idea of the value.
Any help here would be appreciated.

your grandfather had good taste. enjoy them. he must have cared for you. he gave you some guns that will command good prices but nothing that would pay off your mortgage. 0 -
CHECK THE BARREL MARKINS ON THE SAVAGE. DOES IT HAVE A LEVER ACTION??
I WOULD RATHER BE DUCK HUNTING.0 -
I can give some estimates on your Winchesters.
The Md 12 16 ga. was made in 1929, assuming it's just a plain barrel field gradeModified or full choke average condition, no rust, no pits, nocracks or chips and original, it can go anywhere from $350-$600. In 1927 Winchester increased the chamber lenght from 2 9/16 to 2 3/4. By 1932 0r 33 they went to Winchester Proof Steel, so there is only about 5 years they made Nickel Steel guns with 2 3/4 in chambers and they will bring more than others in the same condition. If yours has a Solid Rib down the barrel, or Imp/Cyl chocke add more dollars, if it's a Black Diamond grade even more.
The 94 in 30/30 is common, but one that has been cared for and is in good condition, any where from $250-$400, maybe a little more if it has real nice wood. Again, no rust, pits, chips or cracks.
Hope this gives you an idea of the value. If tyou need more info, email me. Regards Dave0 -
zbynek,
A great big GB welcome to you!
As bobski advisded, quality guns and I hope you keep them in the family. No one is really an expert-just previous experience and keeping up with selling prices. Original strong condition is everything. You have done your research thus will only respond upon
the Winchester Model 12. The gun was made about 1928-29. You neglected to state if the gun has features such as a ribbed barrel, etc. Model 12's are not rare-condition is all. The 16 gauge
is less desirable than a 12 but is still stands as a collectors item.
You need to state strong percentage of original blue, varnish, etc.
Barrel length?
The Savage has a rotary magazine and is not a single shot. Per serial no. should have a cross-checkered trigger. Serial No. perhaps puts this in the Take-down version if your No. is correct. Originally not drilled and tapped for a scope-big price decrease-Lever is case colored originally. Again-original strong condition will dictate the
price. It is necessary to have a photo for a price guess. Date is correct w/o historian's letter.
The M-94 Winchester is as you have researched-manufactured about 1955-56.
Again, original strong original finish-no alterations-bore conditions,
dictate price.
Without hands on inspection, it would be impossible to "lay" a value on these guns. I trust that you enjoy them and remember your Grandfather well. 1010 -
WOW!
Thanks for the rapid responses! I wasn't expecting the info so soon! (I thought I'd come back in a couple of days and check the replies, but you guys are too fast.)
The savage is a lever action and has some fancy desin checkering in the stock and the piece below the barrel. I don't understand what a rotary magazine is, but I am assuming it's a similar concept to the 10-shot clip I have for my ruger 22 rifle. Do you know where I can find literature/drawings on how to operate the magazine?
The 16 ga has ribbing on the pump.
The other feedback/questions will have to wait until tomorrow because I don't have the 16 ga and 30/30 with me right now.
Thanks again!0 -
the rotary magazine is you open the lever that operates the gun and you load (i think ) 5 or 6 shells into the the magazine opening lookdown inside where you loaded the single shell and there is a brass roller you put in 1 shell and push down and then another and another till its full has a counter on the left side (a hole about 1/4 inch in diameter with numbers) this tells you how many you have in the gun to unload you can work the action about half way and it will catch the shells and flip them out Lee 0
