There's a guy named Terry over on the C&R forums who is well thought of.

I learned the hard way that the firing pin rebound spring MUST be the correct spring for the 1896 mauser pistol. Because of the heavy firing pin any lighter spring may allow a slam fire. In my case the pistol doubled, fired in an unlocked condition and split the breechbolt retaining block. This part was the only thing preventing the bolt from flying out into my eye. 0 -
I don't know what caused it but mine also broke. I assumed it was because it was so old. Mine did not double & I didn't know it was broken untill I took it apart. It appeared to be crystallized at the break point. The replacement part I got was made of modern steel.
It's been long enough since I last took the pistol apart that I should try again. It's like a jigsaw puzzle trying to get it back together when you haven't done it for awhile.0 -
All the experts I've communicated with say that the bolt stop is the first thing you should replace when you buy a C96. It takes most of the punishment of the bolt slamming back, although a fresh mainspring is also a good bet because it is responsible for the hammer's duty of absorbing some of the bolt's energy. 0 -
In my case there was no fp rebound spring so I used a ballpoint pen spring. This allowed the slam fire. After the disaster I found the correct spring which was a very heavy coil spring that screwed onto the firing pin body. 0 -
where can you find replacement parts? 0 -
SARCO has some stuff, Numrich has some, there's a company called Marstar in Canada that has some. There's a company in Britain that sells complete units and parts- I don't recall their name- if you surf a bit you'll find them. Visit this excellent site, you'll learn a lot: http://www.northwest-denture.com/mauser1896/ 0 -
