    Why even refinish it ... as it is it "speaks" of you dad and how it was his working gun.

    If your minds made up go to local shops and see what their work looks like and go with the guys who's work looks the best. This shouldn't be problem in the price range you talking.

    My dad recently passed away and he too had a favorite....an 1890 Winchester. I thought some about refinishing and came to the following: 1) He'd be upset at "such a waste on an old gun, 2) it would certainly not increase the value, and 3) it just would be dad's gun anymore. A lot of those scratches came from some long hours trying to make an honest living. There's a little of dad in every one of them. I'd suggest first off to give it a thorough rub down and light cleaning. Maybe recrown if that's damaged and try a little Blue Wonder on a spot out of sight.
