    Artic Wolf...

The Model 70 is the better rifle for the money, and there is no difference in the 308 versus 30-06 caliber wise... they are both .308. The 30-06 cartridge is only nominally more powerful than the 308 cartridge, with no virtual difference until you are pushing both cartridges to their respective upper limits. Just purely for nostalgic reasons, I prefer the venerable 30-06.

    Hello AW,
I can't speak for the Vanquard, but I love my M70's. Have several, both pre and post64, in several calibers (including the 30-06 which gets the most work). The main advantage I see in '06 over 308 is the wide choice of readily available factory ammo (50 grain spitzer to 220 grain. Allows one gun to do the work of many. On second thought, that's a bad idea!!!

When your only tool is a hammer, all problems begin to resemble nails.

    M70 in "ought-6"

More ammo choices either commercial, of course if you reload then 308 bullets are basically same choices until you get into maximum weights.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

If you hadn't included Elk I'd say it's a wash on caliber,But the 30.06 does have an advantage when pushing bullet weights of 180 gr.s and up which are normally used for Elk.The shorter 308 case loses to much case capacity when long heavy bullets are seated compared to the .06. Up to about 165 gr. bullets it's pretty much a wash.-- If you are hunting bear, I like the model 70 because of the controlled round feed with claw extractor over the other.......[8D]

Hello Mr Wolf: i personally own and shoot many model 70`s in my opinion they are the best{as long as they were not built 1964-1973}. the newer models perform as well as the pre 64`s in my opinion, and the 30-06,is a very virsitle round, but!!! for longer shots{say over 350yds} i prefer the 300mag which is still a 30 cal but has the ability to reachout, and still retain its bullet energy on those longer shots, P.S. choose a GOOD scope and use clear fingernail polish on the mount and scope screw threads if you do step up to a mag caliber. supergrade 70

There is the mdl 70 super shadow in .270, 7mm and .300 wsm now available if you aren't stuck on stainless. Seems to be a good gun for the price with the Simmons scope at around $400.

THE MODEL 70 IS HANDS DOWN A BETTER RIFLE . I HAVE OWNED A FWT. IN 30-06 AND ALTHOUGH A LOT OF US HAVE BECOME BORED WITH THE 06 IT WILL ALLOW TO HUNT JUST ABOUT ANYTHING IN OUR NECK OF THE WOODS SIMPLY BY CHANGING BULLET TYPES AND WEIGHT.

I have had and shot 70's for a long time, that is until I shot a Vanguard. Awsome accuracy, smooth and dependable. A customer bought a Vanguard from me in 300WSM Friday and we shot it yesterday-5 shots in less than a dime hole from the box with a Simmons Aetec scope. NUFF SAID.
