What is the best quality heavy barrel 300 WSM under $1000?

the 300wsm will never go the way of the 284win. The caliber is super efficient,..and very acurate. Your choice is a great one.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
    Got Balistics?

I agree with justc. I think the WSMs are here to stay, although we may see the Remington short Ultra mags die on the vine.......[8D]

I just picked up a Howa in .300 wsm but have not shot it yet. Waiting till after tax time so I can put a decent scope on it. But .... go to google ( I'm probably going to get chastized for that one [:D] ) and search on ".300 wsm" and ".300 wsm comparison" (omit the quotes though). You'll find a number of interesting articles in the first 20 results.

    Good luck!

The 300wsm is an excellent cartridge but there is no such thing as a free lunch. The problem starts if you want/need bullet weights in excess of 180grains. Then the AOL(over all length) of the loaded cartridge is a problem. Seated to match the action length , the bullet starts to intrude into the case neck/powder area. The heavier the bullet the farther back into the case the bullet goes. For deer and black bear the 30/06 is as good as it gets. The 300wsm is a case of over kill but then again if you are going to shoot at 400yds. or better the slightly flatter trajectory of the 300wsm in the same bullet weights does matter small range estimation errors less critical. But all said and done ,if you want one that is reason enough to buy. You can't go wrong either way.

The 300 WSM is for real and powder encroachment is largely bunk, unless one is wanting to toss 240SMK's outta a 2.800" mag box.

For slamming critters, the 165XLC is a tough act to follow...................

The advice you are being given is not the best available.

Buy a 308 or 270 for deer and bear. You do not need the 300wsm.

If you are buying just to have one enjoy.

I personally prefer the 7-08 to both the 308 and 270,but dat's subjective.

That the 300Whizzum brings more to the table is not subjective. It makes accuracy on par with a 308 and will out everything a 270,which grants opportunities, should they be upon the menu.

It is my opinion that for a well rounded cartridged of multiple positive attributes, the 300WSM is in lofty air. That it will do it all with modest felt recoil(assuming sound stock design) and convincing downrange performance, much sweetens the pot.

I find it an adept chambering, eager to fill multi roles...................

Stick knows what he is talking about. Indeed the 7-08 is a preferred caliber to the 308 and 270 in my book also. But the 300wsm is definitely one of the big dogs in the hunt. What more do you need? Additional frontal area of a 30 cal, more than enough zip to be pretty darn flat shooting, the inherrent improved accuracy brought to the table by a short action, and enough umph"technical term" to down anything any sane human would desire to hunt. And in a nice tidy lightweight package, that when combined with a quality stock and pad, will not punish the shoulder beyond the tolerable levels of most. For a cartridge that shoots flat and hits with authority, the wsm is a no brainer especially when mentioned in the same sentence with a 308 and 270. Deer are pretty easy to kill. Heaven knows how many have fallen victim to a single round from a .22 rimfire. But when the animal on the receiving end just might try to eat me,should something go amiss, I prefer to leave no doubt that something with one hell of a punch just hit. The 300wsm with a 165xlc or xxx is an almost unbeatable combination. Especially when you consider what the "total package" has to offer.

Everyone has a photographic memory. Only some have film.

Just depends on what your use will be and what you want. The 300WSM is a good cartridge, but more gun than you need for black bear or deer. If you want one gun to hunt bigger stuff too,and have a need for the magnum or will be hunting where shots are extended ranges it might be a good choice. If you don't want the recoil of the 300, any of the 270,7-08,308,30.06 that were mentioned will be fine.It doesn't get any better than the 270 for deer although it wouldn't be my first choice for black bear it will get the job done, especially at the ranges most of them are hunted.Just shoot heavier bullets like the nosler partion 150 or seldom thought of nosler 160 partion,or the barnes bullets mentioned are excellent. The 7-08 will work for what you described also. If you like the lighter recoil get it. The 308 will do anything the 7-08 will and more, but with slightly more recoil and the option of heavier bullets. None are as versital as the old .06 even though it's not as hot a topic of debate as the new beltless magnums(short and long).I've killed everything from ground squirrels thru moose with one and other people have killed everything that walks the face of the earth with one.I have a 300WSM also, and it's a good cartridge with many merits. It's fits in a short action which means a lighter gun and stiffer action. It's very efficient for the powder it burns. But it's overrated ballistically. The lighter gun also means more recoil, and the reason people shoot light bullets in them is that they won't push 180gr and heavier bullets as fast as the longer magnums will. And if all your going to shoot in them is 150 & 165 gr bullets you've really given up the reason people shoot 300 magnums as that is to push heavy bullets fast for retained energy at long range.Might as well just shoot a 7mm magnum and take advantage of the better sectional density and ballistic coeffecients for retained energy and have lighter recoil too. If you shoot factory ammo you'll never see the difference because Winchester loads it and the 300 Win Mag to almost identical velocities. But if you handload the old 300 win will outrun it with every bullet weight. It is almost a ballistic twin to the old 300 H&H magnum when both are handloaded. And deer and black bears don't care if you shoot 1/2" groups or 3/4". All you have to do is shoot minute of deer or minute of bear in the vitals to be successfull.-- I'd say if your just going to hunt the deer or black bear, and your not shooting at long ranges, one of the standard cartridges would serve you fine.ANY of the ones mentioned above will be fine. What's really important(and you know what your shooting experience is,not us) is that you get something you think you can shoot well...............Good Luck............[8D]
