    Hello Idaho cowboy...

The answer to your specific questions is "No"... however, the Model 1894 "Rifles" were made on special order with a 20" octagon barrel, and were/are refered to as "Short Rifles". Even more confusing, some of those "Short Rifles" were ordered with a saddle ring, making them appear to be octagon barreled Carbines. Only a "Rifle" was made with an octagon barrel, and the other identifying feature for a "Short Rifle" versus the "Carbine", is the method used by Winchester to secure the magazine tube to the muzzle end of the barrel. The "Carbine" always used a band, whereas the "Rifle" (regardless of the barrel length always used a dovetailed ring). Winchester never used anything but a full round barrel on a true Model 1894/94 "Carbine".

    Hello idaho cowboy,
I think Bert H. has it about right. The only thing I would add is that usually, the forarm on the short rifle was one inch shorter than a standard rifle. (approximately 8 3/8" for the short rifle; 9 3/8" for the standard).
