Remington 541X
I just picked up a Remington 541X that came in a Remington box that is marked as coming from Horten Dist.Co. I was just curious as to how many were sold like this and what, if anything was changed on these rifles? A friend said his 541X had different sling swivels and that the front globe sight was smaller on his. He also thought this one that I got had a better grade of stock on it. Any info would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

A little over 7,000 541X rifles were produced, but this model was made only for a DOD contract. Several US manufacturers often make a few extra guns for govt contracts, just in case that are needed to make up loss, damage, or theft. After a while, they are disposed of through the distributor network. I suspect that is where your gun came from.
The 541X was shipped sealed in a plastic envelope, & the sights were sealed in a foil packet. Unless your gun was like this when received, it's possible that a previous owner made the changes you described. I think that it's unlikely we will ever be able to find any more information about the differences.

I just like to add that the original Remington box has a Remington printed sticker on the end with the correct serial number of this rifle in the box. The sticker has THE FOLLOWING PRINTED ON IT- Model 541X TM. HEAVY BARREL BOLT ACTION RIMFIRE RIFLE 24" BBL. .22 CAL. LEW HORTON 6#. There is also a smaller red sticker that has Remington B/O SPECIAL with Horton Dist. Co. So the idea of a surplus sold to distributor sounds very logical. 0
