The "painted finish" should have been a tip off that something was not right. If it got hot enough to remove the blueing,i personally would not use it.No telling how hot it got or how it affected the strength of the steel.Return it if you can,or destroy it.Not worth the risk of possible injury.I am not an expert, just my opinion.

If you are uncomfortable with it (I would be). Contact the seller and tell him you want to return it. Your ace in the hole is that it is a potential liability hazzard if anyone shoots it. I'm sure as a seller, he would not want to be the subject of a personal injury lawsuit.

Just talk it over with him.

    Good luck.

If you bought this barrel off of ebay and the seller did not advertise the barrel as being like you say I would ask the seller for a full refund for not stating the mess that the barrel is in. That is exactly what I would do. I wish you the best!!

Believe nothing that you hear and only one half of what you see!!

Therein lies the problem with this whole internet buying thing! Yes you can probably return the barrel but you'll waste tons of time and shipping costs BOTH ways. If you bought it off ebay or THIS site, I've been burned several times. Broken scopes ie:knobs broken clean off, bulged barrels on shotguns, heavily rusted guns, etc. Granted I've always gotten my money back eventually, but what moron tries to pass off a damaged unsafe barrel?

My ffl once received a shotgun for me with the serial number clearly buffed off!!! Then the seller claimed that it was a pre '68 gun that never had a serial number! The galling thing is that the auction sites erase the negative feedback for these fraudulent activities and continue to allow these clowns to sell. It's amazing that sellers pull this. I can only imagine that the vast majority of buyers don't complain and leave negative feedback when they receive damaged merchandise.

Anybody else have these types of experiences??

    ....I never met a gun I didn't like!

Unfortunately you jsut ran into a "scam" which I think is becoming more common on the internet sales. It(the scam) has built in buffers--time, space, and the internet groups like e-bey, Gunbroker, etc. They make the cost of running the site off people who buy and sell on their sites. They try to steer a middle course on disputes and really are in a basic hear-say position. My advice is to be patient and go through the recovery process and see what happens. In the meantime take avantage of the learning curve and don't buy anything on any net that does not clearly state exactly what the item is and its condition. The clue that you had this time was a painted barrel, the next time whistles and bells should go off in your head when you see an item described like that. At best you are taking a chance when you buy sight unseen and little describtion. If he won't answer e-mail asking pointed questions, avoid him like the plague. My thoughts

DONT SHOOT IT! I would take it to a qualified Gunsmith and have
the metal checked for hardness and integrity,OR try to get your money back from the seller which in my experience can be VERY difficult.
If the guy has a Rock solid feedback rating give him the benefit of the doubt that he really over looked the defect, But if he has little or poor feedback then as in my experience with Fleabay most of the time once the seller gets your money its GONE.So Bring it to the gunsmith or try to get your money back. The last resort would be to destroy the barrel (From the breech end!).Good luck.
