nickel or bright stainless

The Blue Book indicates that they came in blue, matte blue, matte stainless, bright stainless, and satin nickel. Although not impossible, stainless usually doesn't rust easily. For that matter, satin nickel doesn't rust easily unless the plating is somehow compromised. Usually cleaning the parts free of rust and using a surface protectant like oil will prevent further rust; but if you've tried this and it hasn't worked for you, and if the rest of the pistol looks o.k., I think I'd change out the parts with new stainless parts.

It is interesting that the pitting is only on the small parts, not the frame or slide.
Stainless will not usually pit. Perhaps the parts were plated (electroplated nickel) but the gun is "bright polished stainless".

I have a brushed nickel firearm which I thought was stainless, but the "color" when placed side by side is a hair different.

Colt currently offers only one handgun in a similar finish; bright stainless.
I saw a SA at a shop which was aparently factory chromed, but I would not know for sure.

My only home remedy would be to replace the parts with standard stainless, since they will wear anyway. The mag release whould be textured, so finish might not be a factor. A less expensive alternative...for now, clean up the pitting with steel wool, moving up to whatever is necessary, to remove the pitting, and keeping the pieces well-oiled if they turn out to be plain steel.

i never seen nickle plate rust before
how ever i did own a stainless steel auto that i had the satin section retouched and it began to spot rust days after
unless your gun was purchased new that may be a good indication that your guns finish is not original
