Strength, durability, gas handling (in case of a ruptured case or pearced primer), reliabilty and historicaly they have been relitivly inexpensive and commonly available for use as a basis for custom rifles.
The pre-64 M-70 Win is baised on the Mauser design, although they cut a couple of corners to reduce production cost.

I don't want to start an argument but I probably will. The following are my thoughts and not sponsored by any other person living or dead. The old mauser action is the grand daddy of all the modern bolt action rifles--changes have made in the safety, locking lug, the way the bolt is removed, etc. but the fact remain they all owe at least part of their design to the orginal mauser. The older mausers were made in a different day and age-a time when craftmanship was a source of pride both with the worker and manufacturer. It was demanded by the buying public. Pick up a german made 95,96 or 98, a swedish made 96 or 38, work the bolt and you can almost feel that pride of workmanship. They are all slick. If they had a shortcoming it was in the metalurgy--the metal in those days was not guite as strong as todays metal--sorry guys but its true. Those old guns were safe up to 50,000 psi or a little beyond- no trouble. But todays magnum caliber start around 54,000 psi and goes up over 60,000 psi for some of them. The metal has to be tougher and is. Todays rifles are tougher but they really do not have the workmanship(even out of the factory custom shops)of the old rifles. I have several old rifles including a 1930 made Remington Model 30 and I would'nt trade or sell it for any amount of money(well-almost any amount). Aw well, shut up and go back to sleep old man. Bye

A sporterized Mauser can be a great rifle to buy depending on the skill of the gunsmith who built it. I have bought a couple of them that have a perfect trigger, shoot very accurately, and have custom finishes. They are beautiful guns for minimal money.
