Barrel Life

Here's a question I've never been able to pin anybody down on: what's the life (in terms of # of rounds) of a typical rifle barrel? 10,000? 40,000? 100,000? something else?

Let's use for example your typical and popular deer rifles chambered in .243,.270,.308,30-06.
    Try those.

308's with the 5r rifling have typically gone 6000-8000rnds or more before being set back. The 243 will be less due to its being relatively similar in powder capacity,..yet retaining a smaller bore diameter,..and the 30-06 will also be less due to increased plasma thrown at the same size bore as the 308.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
    Got Balistics?

you should get about 4,000/5,000 rds. before accuracy starts to degrade, 8,000 to 10,000 before 'hunting' accuracy goes. a lot depends on how offen and how you clean the barrel and how you do your shooting.

lets dont forget to talk about the sweet spot folks. bbl wear is a curve. it starts off loose, tightens up, and then goes bad again. unless you keep an accurate record of the number of your shots, you cant tell if you are on the good side or bad side of your bbl life when a zero is off. many people give up and trade away a perfectly good gun sometimes, not giving it time to reach its sweet spot.

bobski..spoken like a man who has put 15,00 to 20,000 rounds through an M-14 every two years or so!! I am well above 14,000 on my Navy Special barreled M1 MkII and it does seem to be tightening up a little. I expect to see it start to decrease over the next 6,000 rounds. Beach

I wonder sometimes about how much barrel life I have left in some of my guns as some have been with me for 50 plus years. Some haven't been shot all that much-under 5000 rounds, but I do have two .45's(1911 Colt Series 70 and a S & W Model 25-5 revolver) that have in excess of 10,00 rounds each thru them. Had to have the 25-2 tightened up at the cylinder lock up but the barrel is still great looking and shooting. The 1911 doesn't act like it knows it's going to wear much, still shoots one ragged hole at 25 yards off a bench(I can't hold tight enough to really test a gun anymore). My local gunsmith tells me that the majority of the barrels he replaces are because they are flame cut--washed out-- in front of the chamber. I really don't see a soft lead or copper jacketed bullet creating enough friction going down a barrel to do serious damage to a steel barrel. I've also heard more than one gunsmith say they had seen more rifle barrels damaged by improper use of cleaning rods than worn out by shooting.

I once put over 11000 rounds thru a heavy bbl rem. Model 700 308 Win. that I used for general target shooting and silhouette shooting. It peaked in accuracy at about 5500-6000 rds. and as it started to drop off I was able to seat bullets out farther and regain accuracy. When I took that bbl off it would still shoot clover leaf looking groups at 100yds. I wouldn't be afraid to put it back on and use it without turning it back, but I was very carefull to keep it clean........[8D].---- I also once burned up an almost new heavy bbl 220 swift over a 4 day weekend in some hot varmit shooting when I was a kid.Now I take more guns, alternate them and don't get them that hot and dirty........Well most of the time......[:D]

rifle bore and pistol bore are two different things. pistols outlast rifles. my 45 has a good 90,000 rds in it and its still cooking.
