Dependable Home Defense
I have always been a Smith, Colt fan but have noticed a lot of nice looking guns from other countries. I am looking for an affordable 40 or 9mm under 300 dollars. Would Taurus, CZ, EAA be a dependable home defense choice. Have worked with many Smiths and Colts but never any of these. Thanks for any responses.

For what you want to spend you will need to look at used versions of the pistols mentioned and the Taurus, CZ and EAA are all reasonably good pistols.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
The EAA and CZ are clones of each other. I like the EAA version only because they make a 10mm and CZ does not. They are both very reliable and very durable. My 2 cents [8D]

The CZ pistols that I own are very nice quality guns. Built like tanks. Great ergonomics.
The only thing worse than lawbreakers, are lawmakers.0 -
I own 3 of the CZs and they are dependable, accurate and they just feel good. The triggers are good out of the box.

Dependable home defence a remington 870 comes to mind.[:)] 0 -
gap1916, I like a man who knows what he likes and stays with it. I have been a fan of the .41 magnum since it came out and although I have never owned a 10mm, I've been told that it is ballistically a .41 magnum in a rimless form for use in autos. If this be true then it is indeed a really fine caliber. 0 -
You can easily get a Ruger P series gun in this price range. I bet you could even get a new one around $340. There is several variations in 9mm, 40, and 45. The P series are very good pistols.

I love my Combat Commander in 45ACP and my 870 folder with 8 rnd mag. CZ is good but why switch horses in mid stream? 0 -
Yeah, shotguns sure are messy, but they do stop a fight in a hurry-- at close range -- like inside a house. 0 -
Yo jc, dependable home defense, you didn't mention kids, violent spouse's, overpowering inlaws- get a Mossberg 500 "security" it's a 12 ga cal., holds 7 shells (chamber empty) and it's a pump. The sound of a riot gun racking is very unnerving!! 0 -

Madman,
Thanks for your reply, I love my Colt 1911. I also love my Glock 29. This was more for a neighbor of mine. I think my next gun will be the SW99 in 45. I shot one the other day and like the way it felt. A little history on this, I am a retired Police Sergeant. I recently moved into a new neighborhood and the whole block wants to arm themselves and all of them are asking me questions. One of the neighbors that seems really savvy wants a 9mm or 40 but does not have the big bucks to purchase a Colt, Glock or Smith so that is why I was looking at the others. I don't want to recommend anything unless I can be sure it will be dependable for him. That is why it came here. Sorry for being wordy but I apprieciated your comment.
