Hey jj- That name rang a bell from my old gunshop days in the 60's as a teenager. I pulled out some old Gun Digests and found some info.Tingle Mfg.of Shelbyville Ind was not listed in 1959. but was first listed in 1960. It was listed in all up until at least the 1970 issue. Sorry but I just can't find my box of 70's Digests. I did check the next issue I could find,1985, and it was NOT listed. It was in none of the 90's.Hopefully someone can pin it down closer.I'll keep my eyes open, but man you can't imagine how much stuff I have packed away.

    Love them Pre-64's!!!!-Bob

Didn't they make a single shot 22 pistol?

They also used to make a very accurate muzzleloading pistol. Emery

I found their name in the 1965 Gun Digest under muzzle loaders.

Thanks for the info. The BP rifle is a 45 cal Hawken that is of really good quality work. What suprised me is that I had never heard of that name in the BP circles! That does give me a good date as to the gun, 1960s so I can tell my friend about when it was made. Sad if they went out of business because this gun shows some excellent workmanship. Whoever owned this gun before it found its way to the pawn shop where my friend bought it took really good care of it. Again thanks all.

The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four Americans is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. If they're okay, then it's you.

This was posted some time ago, so I'm not sure any of you would be interested anymore. John Tingle died in the late 70's of a heart attack on his way to the shop. It was a small place in the little town of Shelbyville, IN, but it produced some real artistry. John was my wife's grandfather, and I've had the pleasure of maintaining some of his work over the years. He produced BP target rifles and pistols, shotguns, and even a BP two inch trench mortar or two. I was tickled to see that someone other than myself appreciates his work.

OK...so I've been up for 30 hours or so...it's Bob Tingle not John. I keep getting the name mixed up with a guy in my reseve unit. The kids and sleep deprivation do this to me every now and again.

I remember the Tingle as a single shot blackpowder match pistol of semi-custom manufacture. I never had a chance to see one but they were carried by Dixie Gun Works at one time.

Thanks wswift for the added info. I will pass it on to my buddy. I have told him that if he ever sales it, I want it even though I do not shoot many percussion guns, I prefer flintersfrom the time period of 1775 or before. I have kept my eyes open since that original post and have seen one come up for auction. It had been drilled and tapped for a modern scope which turned me away from it. It still brought a good pice though. Again thanks for the added info.
