I just purchased a Spanish double barrel in 20 ga. It has double triggers, matted rib, a checkered beavertail forearm and checkered stock. It's nicely appointed with good workmanship and game scenes engraved on both sides/bottom of the receiver. The name on the barrel is Charles Havan, Castilian grade. I have not been able to find out anything about the maker of this gun in spite of my best web efforts. Do any of you experts know anything about this gun? Can you direct me to a source to read up on it?

Your best bet for researching it, would be at this site.

The Spanish on the barrels ("Fabrica de Escopetas JaBe") just reads "Shotgun Factory JB"; Eibar is of course the main gunmaking city in the Basque region of Spain. "JB" may just be a trade name, or it may be the name of a Basque gunmaker of the past. You need to look for the "date of proof" marking, which will be a letter from A to Z or a letter plus a number, if the gun was made after 1927. You can go to 9mmlargo.com and look up the year of the proof code. If there's no date of proof code, the gun was made prior to 1927. You might also go to spanishguns.com or doublegun.com and ask their forums if they recognize the trade name "JB" or know of a gunmaker with the initials JB.
