Maximum Efective Range 9mm carbine
Does any one know the maximum efective range of a 9mm carbine? Lets say the H&K MP5 and the Ruger P9. I know they will be different. They can have optics or not. Thanks.

Are the ranges you are speaking of designed to stop a full dressed combat individual? Or a head shot?
I am looking at a compact rifle for the truck and camping. I have been using a .223 AR type and want something more compact. I have a Wilkinson Terry carbine and have been thinking about using it for my back packing, camping, truck rifle. It would be used for plinking, and varmits, both the 4 legged and 2 legged varity. I do not plan to shoot over 100 yards with it.
Thanks

we could engage targets at 50yds. we had to steady our guns for 100yds. we did 2 to 25 yds all day.

Greg,
I can hit one gallon paint cans at two hundred measured yards with my stocked Artillery Luger. It has an eight inch barrel.
Period publications claim out to six hundred on a man sized target. Haven't tried that.0 -
Ruger carbine, with practice you could hit gallon cans or milk jugs out to 200, but the thing is the energy would have bled off considerably. Probably would be 150-175 ft. lbs. maximum
H&K - never had the privlidge to shoot one, but don't imagine you could hit all the reliably at 200 yds, and as this is a shorter bbl. energy would probably be down around 125 ft. lbs.
Gunfight/man stopping effectiveness ... there is much debate at close range (under 7 yds.) but at the risk of getting jumped on I'd say 75 yards tops with jhp, gold dot and the like. Beyond that there is a clear question of having enough bullet velocity for the round to perform as designed.
Optics only improves your ability to hit a target, so there is no correlation to effectiveness other than with an optical sight at longer distances you could lay more rounds on the target.

my SPANISH DESTROYER BOLT ACTION CARBINE in 9MM LUGER (officers model, only made for 2 years) has battle sights graduated out to 700 meters. while i think this distance is a wee bit over-optimistic, i have engaged 3" & 5" spinners at 150 yds with good results. best regards, mike.

those are tactical distances i gave you to achieve an arrary of objectives. supress fire, movement, in and out, etc... 3 round bursts full or sa. im sure all my fellow vets will agree that full auto and 3 round burst isnt always meant for accuaracy. some of its luck. some of it is just to keep heads down. unless you help us help you by telling us what you need your 9mm to do at these distances, we are just throwing some things out there for you to chose from. with me? let us know and we can tweeek it for you. mp5 shooters will know that getting the gun on target takes lot of body control and is tricky to master in f.a.. if you break your 'lean into it' at the wrong time, bullets go everywhere. 0 -
The MP-5 is not effective at distances past 40 or so yrds accurately in my experience. However my Ruger PC-9 carbine and my Hi-Point arms carbines will shoot consistantly out to 75 yrds,or maybe further but any more distance than that and the cartridge has fizzled out.

I can hit a man size target all day at 50 yards with my red dot attached. It is kind of like cheating. I guess that would be considered effective. Could I shoot further and hit the target? Yep, but why? That is not what this weapon/round is designed for. The 9mm CARs are for CQB and suppression as others have mentioned. Having a variable power scope on a 9mm carbine is like having tits on a bull.

From a carbine the energy would probably be a little higher--in the 200-225 ft-lbs. range--especially if you're using a +P round. The longer barrel of a carbine will usually give the bullet more velocity/energy.
(Interestingly, 9mm ammunition with heavier bullets--such a 147 grain--can actually have lower velocity/energy when fired from a carbine than when fired from a handgun. The extra barrel length of the carbine creates friction losses greater than the extra "push" of the powder's gasses acting on the bullet in the longer barrel.)0 -
147gr's at 50yds would drop 2" out of car's and mp5's. @ 100yds they were 4 to 8" low. it was worthless except for supress fire.
