I'm no expert in rolling blocks nor foriegn handguns, but maybe can give you some leads for your search.

Does the pistol have rifled barrels? If so, it may be part of a special order for the Russian Czarist military. I can't remember what special unit these were made for nor what caliber they were, but they were ordered from the Nagant factory in Belgium either previous to, or as an alternative to, the familiar Nagant gas-sealing 7.62 revolvers, which originally also came from the Nagant factory. As to caliber, check .44 Russian, as that was the 19th century Russian service caliber in S&W revolvers. An interesting antique that would have considerable value to a Russian military collector. This is guessing, I have to admit....

If there is no rifling, I would guess that this is a Belgian- manufactured "Garrucha" or "snake pistol" made for the South American trade. I'd have no idea what caliber; you'd need a chamber cast to tell. Many are unrifled; some, especially in smaller calibers like .22RF, have rifled barrels.

Perhaps someone more experienced in "old gun law" can comment on the legality of smooth-bore "Garruchas"?

Hope this gives you some leads until a real expert turns up.

I would surmise that the pistol would predate the gas-check revolver by several years.

Some where in my piles of books I have one on early Remington stuff.

Picture sure would help if you've got one.

yes it has rifled barrels, I forget the exact number it calibrated at but just larger then 38 special. it does have a hallard.. grrr the ring on the bottom for a rope. I will shoot you some pics asap.
thank you all so much for the help.. it is really fun researching.
best guess so far it was made between 1870 and 1901. the only double barrel pistol I read about is mentioned as being in the Musee Dd L'Armee. Paris. but that is a hand rotated match lock.
    well talk with you soon

The Nagant and Remington brothers met around 1867 and developed a working arrangement, much like today's licensing agreements. They even developed improvements to Remington designs which were adopted by the Remingtons.

While Remington did not mfg. a double barreled pistol on their rolling block action the Nagant's did in 1877. It was the first metallic cart. handgun to be accepted by the Belgian Govt. for it's Gendarmerie forces.

The cartridge, of 9.4 mm caliber, was created by Bachmann, a Belgian manufacturer. This cartridge is known under the names : 9 mm Belgian or 9.4 mm Nagant. The lead bullet of 12 grams weight was paper patched and inserted into a 22 mm rimmed case with a slight taper. The charge was of 1 gram of very fine black powder (hunting quality) that allowed for a 197 m/s muzzle velocity.

Two types of the model 1877 pistol can be found. The first series (until serial number 1050) was built with a two-part receiver. After the first series, a one part receiver was used. The exact quantity produced is unknown, but is estimated at around 2,000 pieces. These handguns are therefore very rare to find and costly. When replaced by the Belgian Government, these pistols were sold as military surplus to specialized firms. Many were bought by American companies like Bannerman.

The pistol remained in Belgian service until 1901 and continued to be sold commercially until 1910.

Told 'ya a real expert would come along! And the caliber of that RB police sidearm would be "just over .38". It was kind of a "retro" choice for them to make, but think how it would feel to have to look into those double barrels!
