Ignorant in California
I apologize for the naive post All,
I was just hoping to get some clarification from the group on "ban." I am a non-native, so I was hoping the forum could help. I want to get myself a Bushmaster (or suitable substitute) for some range fun. I am trying to figure out a LEGAL method, if one exists, to get one. From reading www.awbansunset.com, I can't figure out whether or not I can accomplish this. My original understanding was that I was pretty much out-of-luck, but the following section from the website confused me (and by confused I mean offered a glimmer of hope):
Exemptions to the law:
Title 18, Chapter 44, section 922 states:
(1) It shall be unlawful for a person to manufacture, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon.
(2) Paragraph (1) shall not apply to the possession or transfer of any semiautomatic assault weapon otherwise lawfully possessed under Federal law on the date of the enactment of this subsection.
(3) Paragraph (1) shall not apply to -
(A) any of the firearms, or replicas or duplicates of the firearms, specified in Appendix A to this section, as such firearms were manufactured on October 1, 1993;
Can I buy a pre-ban? or buy individual upper and lower assy or a kit and assemble myself? Is there any hope? Thanks in advance to all who take the time to reply.

ZXJOKER, Mark Christian could best answer your question. I think he's probably on his way home from the Vegas shot show. He has a shop in Ca. and deals in military guns. BTW, welcome to the forums! 0 -
Mark Christian Will have a firm answer, But as I recall, (Being a CA resident myself) 1999 was the last chance to buy and register ANY AR-Type rifle. Or Clone.

That's kind of what I expected. Thanks everyone for the feedback! I will wait to see if Mark can shed any light on the subject. Looking forward to getting involved with the forums! Take care.

Francf is right. Guns that fall in the Assault Weapon catagory can no longer be bought here in Cal.
Since the ban they can no longer be bought new or as private party transfers with the exception of law enf and dealers licensed to handle AW's. The guns possessed prior to the ban could be kept as long as they were registered.
The ban applies to the lowers since that is the registered part. The upper receivers can still be bought in Cal.

Hello Joker. By the time I made it back from the SHOT Show you have already received the correct answer to your question. The registration period for assault rifles ended a few years back and none can be brought into the state now for any purposes other than for dealer sales to law enforcement and a few other very narrow exceptions which have no impact on 99.99% of California residents. There is a permit process for new AWs, but no permits have ever been issued to private citizens so that is a dead end. The possible sunset of the 1994 Crime Bill will have no impact on CA State law so don't get your hopes up in September!

There are some models modified for sale in Ca., such as AR type and FAL type with fixed mags. But your best bet is a springfield M1A.

Since you are a subject of the State in Kalifornia, and not a citizen in one of the other the free states, then the answer to you question is simple. Nope, no way/no how, uh-uh, naa, doo-yee, dac, nyet.[V] Not even if AWB sets. As long as you live in Kalifornia you are SOL as far as trying to own an AR type rifle.

Thanks everybody. It looks like I may have to establish residency elsewhere in order to accomplish. I greatly appreciate all the help!
