Colt 1849 ???

I have a Colt Model 1849 6" s/n 642xx (1853) with an interesting marking on the trigger guard where you would normally find the caliber marking it looks French is stamped from a single die and says DES ENFANTS Any info would be appreciated

  That is a interesting marking? As the literal translation is "For Children".
  
  How would that apply to the caliber?
  
  Maybe some research would be in order, couple of good books recommended by Flayderman are, "Colt's Pocket '49" by Watts & Jordan and "Colt's Variations of the Old Model Pocket Pistol" by Shumaker.
