Smith & Wesson .32 DA 4th model
I have been given a S&W .32 DA 4th model, serial# 48791, 3 1/2" bbl. that belonged to my great grandfather. The gun seems to be mechanically sound, but the appearance leaves alot to be desired. It has very little of the nickel finish left. Would it be wise to try and have the gun refinished, or would it be better left alone? If I did opt to refinish, how would I find a qualified person to do it? Thanks for any input.

Second Saxon's suggestion.
However, the s/n you give, if the revolver is a 32 and not a 32-20, is for a 32 HE Model of 1903 1st change which were mfg. 1904-1906
If it is a 32-20 then it would be the Model of 1905 3rd change mfg 1909-1915. Early manufactured revolvers in this model were marked 32 Winchester and 32 WCF which is mistaken by some folks as 32 long and the serial numbers can be found in both 32 and 32-20 models.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
This is a .32 S&W caliber 4th model. It is a top break with the rounded triggerguard and pinned front sight. From what I have read, it is an early serial # that would date it 1883-1884. 0 -
That clears things up ... must have had HE on the brain or something, any way a Top Break 4th Model in the condition mentioned would only be worth $75 +/- and a refinish as SP mentions above is probably $150-200
It's a neat old revolver with family "history", might just be best to clean it up, keep it oiled and in the family.
Sorry about the mixup and for future posts please remember that in this medium we are all "blind" so give as much upfront info as you can. That way "geezers" like myself who's minds wander will not go looking in the wrong direction like HE's -vs- TB's[:D]

Thanks for the reply contender. I believe I will just clean it up and store it. This is one that will stay in the family. 0 -

Good Choice!! Glad you are following the excellent advice you've been given. A family heirloom in original condition has class.[8D]
