Re-bore and chamber
I have a small single shot "rolling-block" .22 rifle that I am thinking about having re-bored and chambered to .32 H&R Mag. This would also intail changing from rim to center fire. Opinions please.

Assuming your considering this because the barrel is shot out, relining the barrel back to 22LR would be the best bet.
One major consideration to think about is the "breach face thrust" (or bolt thrust as it's also known as) increase and weather the action will take it safely. RB's arn't as strong as they first appear, and when they fail it tends to be in the catestrofic mode (granade) not the gradual way a bolt action does (sinking the lugs into the receiver face).
It's simple to calculate the breach thrust, inside area area of the case head times the pressure of the cartridge (32H&R Mag = 21,000cup or about 19,000 psi)
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
Tailgee is right. Go for the .22 reline. Not too expensive and makes it into almost a new gun. 0 -
most of the old stevens 22's for example have to small of pins to hold headspace above 22 rimfire...the savage stevens clones on late 1970's have good enuff pins to redo 22 mag ...have done many...spend money on new metal above 22 & reline old 0 -

It is a fairly common job, or used to be when those guns were more common, and .32 rimfire became scarce, to repin for .32 Ling Colt, a much milder cartridge than the H&R Mag. Moving the firing pin hole is no great feat, but will cost a few bucks. Ordinarilly the chamber is fine as is. One problem to watch for is the .32 Long Colt brass is becoming quite scarce nowadays, so you should begin accumulating some. Going to the S&W Long or the H&R Mag will cost a rechamber job and downloading in most of these old boys' rifles.
Reloading without dies, using buckshot bullets is a (sorry) blast.
Just which "rolling block" do you have? Many, as noted above are a bit frail for the pressures involved.
This Korean Conflict vet salutes you and your generation.

Thank you all for your input.Ross; the rifle I have is an old Hopkins & Allen Model 766 takedown.
