What is the advantage of a FMJ bullet and why does the military use them? I would think a soft point ect. would do more damage on a target. Somebody set me straight.
    Thanks

All military ammo ball made in the last 100 yrs + has been FMJ, this will not hurt the bore, the guns were made to shoot it. Some people are very misinformed, your friend is one of them.

ditto ... you just have to be careful of ammo that is corrosive and some of the surplus stuff out there still is. Again the battle rifles of that era were built to work with ammo of that era, but, it is better to be safe than sorry. If you buy some surplus ammo, when you fire the rifle ... clean it throughly when you are done, don't put the job off until the next day or whenever, do it when you get home.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

Your friend might be thinking of Steel jacketed bullets (and as soft and thin a steel they're made of they don't hurt either).

Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.
