Info on Muzzle Loader
Can anyone tell me something about a SXS muzzle loader? It appears to be a 12 guage cap and ball shotgun.
The only writing that I can find on it, is on the top of the barrels it says: Superior Stub Twist. On the stock, about two inches up from the buttplate is an inlaid brass shield.
It has a four digit serial number on the underside of the barrels 3992.
The receiver is engraved as are the hammers and trigger guard.

Is it possible that this is a Joseph Manton & Co.?
It has a wooden ram rod with brass tips on both ends. The end that goes in first has a two piece brass fitting that unscrews revealing a bullet puller.

NJ I don't know much that would be helpful, but I noticed you mentioned the ram rod has a bullet puller. That rod is certainly made for a rifle, not a shotgun. Of course it might not be the original one. The gun itself does sound like a shotgun, but someone else will probably give you a better answer.

Take it you have checked the barrels and that they are in fact smooth bore?
Yes, it sounds like a dumb questions, but ... it may be an old double rifle, especially if the ramrod appears to match the piece and the device you described is a bullet/ball puller.
Of course it could be a shotgun and the device described was only provided to sag erant cleaning patches ...
If there is any way you coupd get us some digital images that would really help as I could do some reference book searches for "look likes"
Seems like I have seen a brass shield on a stock before but for the life of me I can't remember any details ... my just be the wandering of a "geezer mind".

Charlie I can't help you out with any information on this piece, but this is one you just got from your neighbor right? Earlier post?
Woo I need to move!!![:D]
Very nice indeed.

The checkering on the stock looks almost identicial to my Richland Arms 12 ga sxs in placement and size. Your has better wood and back action locks. Mine has no brass shield and forward action locks. Is the trigger guard brass and does it have some scrolling on it? It could be a fancier model of Richland Arms sxs or it could be one from a host of other manufactures. Have you taken the barrels off to look for any other markings as well as taken the locks off for markings on the back of them as well. Any more markings would help to narrow it down. Sorry I could not be more helpful! I will agree that the ram rod probably was not intended for the shotgun if it has a ball puller on it.
The statistics on sanity are that one out of every four Americans is suffering from some form of mental illness. Think of your three best friends. If they're okay, then it's you.

Jim,
I don't know how to remove the barrels. I assume that the slide thingy on the front stock is a release, but it seems to be stuck.

Well the pix will give me something to compare to the reference books
As for the barrel the wedge pin taps out, use a brass drift pin on the narrow side and lightly tap it. The head (wider side) will become exposed to the point that you should be able to get a grip on it. There are tools for this, but if you work carefully you won't have a problem.
With the barrels off you may find some other markings.

Contender,
Got the barrels off. There are many proof marks, but because of the age of the gun, they are hard to read.
One really stands out and that's a crown over the letter "M"
Hope this helps....

Charlie,
If it's what I'm thinking ... examine the left lock, near the top edge of the lock should be some information, running toward the back, maybe due to age some is worn away and/or blends in with the engraving, maybe not ... take a close look and let us know what you see.
As this is number 10 you'll need to start a new post.

Contender,
I see nothing where you suggested that I look. On the bottom of the barrels under the wood are the numbers 77 and 32. There is something that looks like a tree, 3 initials that I cannot read and in pencil or pen, is written Nel.
There are other marks that I cannot decipher. I already told you about the crown over "M" and on the lug next to that just an "M"
The words on the top of the barrels near the breech "Superior Stub Twist in Old English script.
Thanks for your help.......

Contender,
Please take a look at my post "Manton Photo" in General Discussion.
Near the end of the thread, I have posted a photo of a marked Manton showing the shield that I was telling you about. Thank you.
