charter 2000, rossi, taurus, best one ?
I own several small auto's but my wife is wanting a small revolver for her carry gun,she feels better knowing it will not jam and you dont have to find a safty,I am looking at several including the ruger 101 and of course the S&W but my local shop has all three of the above revolvers in 38 special with a 2" or so barrel for around $200, My wife likes these because of the larger rubber grips and has about decided she wants the charter because the barrel is ported.I lean toward the taurus but just because of the name and they have been around a while,,whats the difference in quality between these lower end revolvers

I own a charter arms .38 undercover snub nose. It's a nice gun, and I've never had any problems with it and I paid around 200 for it. Taurus makes nice guns (I own one of their 9mms). Rossi makes good guns too (I own one of their .357s), but is either out of business or was bought by another company (one of those). Personally, I'd go for the Taurus. I don't know what model you are looking at, but she may want to go for something that is hammerless so that the hammer won't snag on anything if she ever needs to draw it. Hope this helps. - Toe 0 -
Taurus now owns Rossi so the world's gotten a little smaller.
Charter Arms has been turning out revolvers for 20 years or better and they are a good value priced handgun.
Ranking things quality wise is a bit more subjective. My personal feelings is the Taurus is the better revolver in overall fit and finish. And the "bread and butter" gun for Taurus has been their Model 85 in 38 Special.
I think where things are at is which one your wife likes the best and is therefore most likely to practice the most with.
One other thing to note is that in carry revolvers there is always the aspect of the hammer hanging up when trying to draw the weapon. If the revolver she picks has a pronounced hammer consider having it at least semi-bobbed.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
I wish you'd also be looking at a light alloy S&W. Check the auctions.
These guns dont wear out so a used one is no risk.
I've handled some pretty junky Rossis and hard to open Charters. I own a 44 Charter and love it for 5 shots but they're rough on opening and reloading. In addition trigger pulls on these cheap guns isn't so hot.0 -
I have described Taurus quality as now being as high as S&W ever got down to back in the LSI days. 0
