    Hello Prescott Pete,
There is a relatively new product out there called "Wonder Blue". The company sells a gun clearner that is used for cleaning the outside surfaces prior to bluing.
The company claims that the gun cleaner will desolve copper and lead in a bore. I'm not sure of the web site, but it may be www.wonderblue.com.
    Hope this helps,
    Taperloc.

Pete, Powder fouling is easy to get out with Hoppe's, Shooters Choice or other cleaner. Once it is out dry the bore with a couple of patches. Then start on the copper. I use either Shooter's Choice or a copper remover called Sweet's. Either will remove the copper in a short period of time , just follow the instructions on the bottles. Once I get the copper out, I coat a patch with J-B Bore Cleaner and run the patch back and forth thru the barrel at least 15 to 20 times. Put on a clean patch and push the J-B out the front and put on another clean patch and do the same. Then I really wet(dripping wet) a patch with the Shooters Choice powder cleaner and wash out the bore with wet patch until the J-B is all out, then dry the bore with clean patches. Then I put some J-B Bore Bright on a patch and repeat the 15 or 20 passes in the bore with it. Wash and dry as before. You should end up with a really scrubbed clean barrel at this point. After a cleaning or two with this method you'll find the bore has been polished to the point that copper fouling will be greatly deminished and the Copper Solvent alone will usually do the trick. If you are a little lazy(like me), you can get one of the Outers Electronic Cleaners and believe me they will get the copper out, without the elbow grease. You will still need to clean the powder residue out first though. Pinhead.

Second He-Dog on choices and order of the choices. Was really big on Butch's until I started using Blue Wonder.

BW's not a widly distributed product (yet), but they have a web site and you can order online.

SWEET'S 7.62 bore cleaner. I have used nearly all of the major copper remover products out there and nothing works any better than SWEET's for me. I DO NOT like to clean guns so any product that makes it easier for me is the one I will use. One word of advice, don't use brushes with it. Since it eats the copper in the bore it also eats the brushes. Except for my shotguns and lead shooting handguns, I haven't used brushes for over 20 years. After the barrel is broken in, despite what some "experts" will say they do get smoother with shooting, you should be able to clean with less than a dozen patches. I have one 222 REM that is clean in 6-8 patches and that is after 100+ rounds. I haven't used the Outer's Electronic thing so I can't comment on it except it seems to me that the time spent setting it up is about what it takes to clean the old fashioned way.

Thanks for all the replies.I am going to buy all the recommended products and try them. I recall that an old timer gunsmith once told me about JB's to help correct an accuracy problem I had with a rifle. It worked too because it smoothed out the rifling.I appreciate your time.

If you can't find them locally in your area, Midway and other big distributers carry both Butch's and Blue Wonder. One of our forum members also carries the latter. After using both for several months, I will give the nod to Blue Wonder, but both do a fantastic job! Now if they could only make it smell like Hoppe's . . . .

I would use the above solvents and a good bore snake.

If you have a bore that fouls there is NO cleaner on this planet that cleans faster than SWEETS 7.62. Follow the directions and watch the copper leak out of the muzzel. Sweets is the absolute best and fastest copper solvent know to man. You MUST follow it with some sort of oil,...my recommendation being Kroil. Sweets is the best,..it's it,..and that's that. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!!!!

Wipe-out works great too. But not as fast as sweets.

It depends on the gun too. I shoot mainly surplus guns. Some of my Mausers have shiny like new bores; others are a bit dark from former neglect. It doesn't matter which cleaner I use. For the shiny ones, 4-5 patches wet, 2 dry, and am done. For dirty ones... some never come clean. I generally us surplus USGI bore cleaner, comes in a white jug. $5/quart. Great for powder fouling, doesn't do much for copper though.

Which brings me back to your problem. Could be the solvent is dissolving your brush. Try a steel or nylon brush and see what happens. I haven't used Blue wonder or Sweets but can't imagine they do any better than Hoppes, though they may be faster, so stay with what you know first with the brush switch; if still unsatisfied switch solvents. One last note, you don't need to remove all copper every time. You know that right? I clean out powder residue every time, copper every 5th.
